This movement was launched by a group of motivated people who include doctors,
engineers, social workers, architects, accountants, students and also common men. There has
been an ongoing epidemic of Tuberculosis in the country that kills 17% patients (48 deaths
every hour), a severe form called as MDR-TB has cure rate of only 45%, Swine flu epidemic
is still lingering and taking lives. Not to mention, the novel coronavirus has been classified as
a pandemic for more than 2 years now. The main route of transmission of these deadly diseases
is coughing and spitting. If fellow citizens do their duty by following coughing etiquettes and
stop public spitting, we will save millions of lives and support the government in eradication
of these deadly diseases. It will also make our country clean and take a leap towards Swaccha
Bharat and healthy Bharat.
This is where the ‘Spit-free India Movement’ comes into the picture. The Spit-Free India
movement is a campaign launched by National Service Scheme (NSS) and Sambandh health
foundation on 24th April 2020 onwards to spread awareness about the harm caused to the
people and surrounding due to spitting especially during the pandemic. An online petition for
anti-spitting was also signed at the height of the first wave of the pandemic. This issue was
addressed during ‘Mann ki Baat’ where the honorable prime minister discussed and concluded
that spitting is a punishable offence.
