1. Compute the double integral sin(3x + 2y) dA.
[0,π/6]×[0,π/4]

Solution: We write it as an iterated integral and compute:

Z π/4 Z π/6 Z π/4 π/6

sin(3x + 2y) dx dy = − cos(3x + 2y) dy =

2. Compute the iterated integral x + 2y dy dx.

Solution: This is a straightforward computation:

3. Consider the iterated integral √
5x dx dy.
0 y

(a) Sketch the domain of integration.

(b) Change the order of integration, i.e. write the integral in the form
Z ?Z ?
3
5x dy dx where the appropriate limits of integration have to be
? ?
supplied in the place of the question-marks.
(c) Evaluate the resulting integral from (b).

1
Solution:
(a) To plot the domain of definition, we need to note that our first inte-
gration (the inner one) is in the horizontal direction with left boundary

the parabola x = y (or y = x2 ) and right boundary the line x = 1.
The vertical range of all of these horizontal integrations is from 0 to
1. This yields the following domain:

2 y = x2

0 x
−4 −3 −2 −1 0 1 2 3 4
−1

−2

−3

(b) We will now integrate first vertically (i.e. with respect to y) and
then horizontally (i.e. with respect to x). This means that we should
look for the lower and upper boundary of our domain. The lower
boundary is y = 0 and the upper is y = x2 . Finally, the horizontal
range of all these vertical integrations is going to be from 0 to 1. Our
integral becomes:

Z 1 Z x2
3
5x dy dx
0 0

(c) We now perform iterated integration:

Z 1
x2
x3

y·5 dx
0 0

2
which becomes
Z 1
3
x2 5x dx
0

1
We now apply the substitution u = x3 or du = 3x2 dx or 3 du = x2 dx
that yields:
Z 1
1
5u du
3 0

which equals:

4
3 ln 5
since the antiderivative of ln u is u ln u − u and ln 1 = 0.
