Abstract

This research work was aimed at finding out the Effects of Mobile Phone Usage on

Academic Performance of the Selected Grade 11 Students in Misamis Oriental General

Comprehensive High School. One questionnaire was drawn/drafted, for the students. 60

copies were made for students. The investigation was empirical. Students were sampled in

the study. It was discovered that the use of mobile phones constituted a distraction to students

and have negatively effectively affected their academic performance. It is essential to develop

a curriculum that is inclusive of strategies of coping with mobile phone usage without

impairing academic performance.

Chapter 1

Introduction

Background of the Study

The use of mobile phones has become increasingly ubiquitous, especially among the

younger generation. With the ease of access and convenience offered by these devices, many

students use them as a tool for communication, entertainment, and even for academic

purposes. However, concerns have been raised regarding the effect of mobile phone usage on

academic performance. The performance of secondary school students in their studies has

been poor. Performance of a student often depends on how serious he is with his studies. And

this may not be unconnected with the student’s possession of mobile phones, among other

distracting factors. Academic achievement is the outcome of education — the extent to which

a student, teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals, academic performance is

the ability to study and remember facts and being able to communicate your knowledge
verbally or on paper or it’s how students deal with their studies and how they copy with or

accomplish different tasks given to them by their teachers.

A mobile phone (also called mobile cellular telephone, or cell) is an electronic device used

for two-way radio telecommunication over a cellular network of base stations known as cell

sites. The origin of mobile phones can be traced back to the late forties (1940s). The concept

of the mobile phone was developed from the innovation of a radio used in a taxicab, police-

cabs, ambulances and other vehicles that used two-way radio to communicate with one

another or a main headquarters. In 1960’s mobile phone technology was available, but the

‘catch’ was that the mobile user had to stay within a certain broadcast area. According to

Shreiner (2012) cell phones present new opportunities and challenges for students. Along with their

books and school supplies, many students make their trip to school with their mobile phone. The

presence of cell phone provides a host of options and challenges for today’s students.

Mobile phones can be a helpful academic tool, or a hurtful academic disruption depending upon the

attitude and use pattern of the student owner.

The purpose of this study is to provide a solution or contribute to find a solution to

this issue or the topic that i choose. It will produce new knowledge or deepen understanding

of an issue and give the readers a guidelines on maybe how can we eradicate this dilemma.

And to know the reasons and causes of why students use mobile phones and what is the

effect, good or bad on their academic performance.

This research aims to investigate the relationship between mobile phone usage and

academic performance among students. Specifically, the study will examine the frequency

and duration of mobile phone usage, as well as the types of activities that students engage in

while using their phones. The research will also explore how mobile phone usage impacts

various aspects of academic performance, such as grades, study habits, and attention span.
The findings of this research will be valuable for educators, parents, and students

themselves, as they seek to understand the impact of mobile phone usage on academic

performance. This research can also inform the development of guidelines and policies to

promote responsible and effective use of mobile phones in academic settings.

Statement of the Problem

This study attempts to fill the gap by investigating the effect of the Mobile Phone Usage to

the Academic Performance of the Selected Students. To fill any gaps in our knowledge

regarding this study, this research will address the following research questions.

1. What are the effects of mobile phone usage on the academic performance of students?

2. What are causes why students use mobile phones?

3. How the mobile phone usage does affect the academic performance of students?

4. Is there any relationship between students’ academic performances and the effect of

mobile phone usage?

Scope and Delimitation

This study is limited among Students that have a poor academic performance because

of mobile phone usage. The research would like to investigate and discover the Effect of

Mobile Phone Usage to the Academic Performance of the Selected Students. This study will

not cover other problems that are not associated with effects of Mobile Phone Usage to

students.

This study will undertake from April 2023. The student in this case will present

different issues but I will only focus on the effect of mobile phone usage to the academic

performance to students.
The respondents of this study will be the students here in Misamis Oriental General

Comprehensive High School that belongs to students who frequently using mobile phones.

Significance of the Study

The study will improve and develop the compliance of respondents from the data

gathered ad insights elicited as a basis for their planning, implementation and evaluation.

This research will help the respondents to have adequate knowledge about oral

contraceptives, their responsibility compliance and its advantage and disadvantages.
