EARTH & LIFE SCIENCE

ACTIVITY NO.7

Direction: Answer the following question.

1.) How will you apply the themes in biology to the issue of A( H 1 N 1 ) virus?

This segment reassortment can happen in cells infected with different human and animal viruses, and
the resulting virus may encode completely novel antigenic proteins to which the human population has no
preexisting immunity. But there's a branch of biology called virology studies viruses, which exhibit some
of the characteristics of living entities but lack others. It turns out that although viruses can attack living
organisms, cause diseases, and even reproduce, they do not meet the criteria that biologists use to define
life.

2.) Why do you think evolution, genetics, and biochemistry are considered as unifying themes in
biology?

I think evolution, genetics, and biochemistry are considered as unifying themes in biology because
evolution offers a comprehensive explanation for the pattern of similarities and differences that exist in all
living thing. And genetics is concerned about the scientific study of how genes control the characteristic
of such organism. It is somehow connected with biochemistry because it deals with the chemistry of
living things and how it reacts to the chemical characteristic of the environment.

3.) How will you use these themes in understanding in the concepts of biology throughout this unit?

I will use these themes in understanding the concepts of biology throughout this unit when I must
study biology to learn how to aid both humans and animals. Learning about the human body's inner
processes, organs, neurological system, blood, reproduction, development and diseases all prove essential
for treatment and research. All living organisms share several key characteristics or functions: order,
sensitivity or response to the environment, reproduction, growth and development, regulation,
homeostasis, and energy processing. When viewed together, these characteristics serve to define life.
