ARITHMETIC MEANS AND THE nth

TERM OF THE ARITHMETIC
SEQUENCE
It is easy to find the next three
terms if the sequence is already given but
what if the problem is to find the 100th term 2. What is the sum of the first 10
or the 250th term? Can you find the terms? terms of the geometric sequence
Using the process that is on the left will 4 , 2 , 1?
take much of your time and effort. There is
a short cut in doing this. This is by using
this formula :
The nth term of an arithmetic
sequence with first term a 1 and common
difference d is given by:
a n=a1 + d(n−1)
Example:
1. Find the 21st term of the
arithmetic sequence: 6 , 9 , 12 ,
15 , …
Solution :
a. From the sequence,
a 1=6 , d=3 , and n=21.
b. Using the formula, substitute
these values.
a 21=6+3 ( 21−1 )
a 21=6+3 ( 20 )
a 21=6+60
a 21=66
c. Thus, the 21st term is 66.

2. In the arithmetic sequence:

7 , 10 ,13 , 16 , … ; find n if a n=304
Solution:
a. From the sequence,
a 1=7 , d=3 , and a n=304 .
b. Using the formula, substitute
these values.
a n=a1 + d(n−1)
304=7+3 (n−1)
304=7+3 n−3
304=4 +3 n
304=3 n
n=100
c. Thus, 304 is the 100th term of
the sequence.
The first and last terms of a finite
arithmetic sequences are called
arithmetic extremes , and the terms in
between are called arithmetic means . In
the sequence 4 , 8 , 12 , 16 , 20 , 24; the
terms 4 and 24 are the arithmetic
extremes, while 8 , 12 , 16 , and 20 are the
arithmetic means. Also, 8 is the arithmetic
mean of the arithmetic extremes , 4 and
12..
The arithmetic mean between two
numbers is sometimes called the average
of two numbers. If more than one
arithmetic means will be inserted between
two arithmetic extremes, the formula for
a −a
finding d , which is d= n k , can be used.
n−k
Example
Insert three arithmetic means between 8
and 16.
Solution:
a. If three arithmetic means will be
inserted between 8 and 16, then
a 1=8 and a 5=16.
b. Using formula for d , compute for
the common difference.
a n−a k a5−a 1 16−8 8
d= = = = =2
n−k 5−1 5−1 4
c. The arithmetic means are a 2 , a3 ,and
a4
a 2=a1 +d =8+2=10
a 3=a2 +d =10+2=12
a 4=a3 +d=12+2=14
d. Thus, the three arithmetic means
between the arithmetic extremes, 8
and 16 , are 10, 12, and 14.

FINDING THE SUM OF THE TERMS OF

A GIVEN ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE
(Arithmetic Series)
If there are only 20 terms of a
given arithmetic sequence, it will be easy
to find the sum of those by just listing and
adding them altogether, but what if the
sum being asked is the sum of 100 terms?
It would be tiring and confusing to list
down then add the 100 terms. That’s why
we can use the formula :
n
Sn= [2 a1 +d ( n−1 ) ]
2
Where: Sn is the sum of the
first n terms
a 1is the first term
d is the common
difference
Example
Find the sum of the first 16 terms of the
arithmetic sequence :
8 , 11 ,14 ,17 , 20 , …
Given:
a 1=8 n=16 d=3 S 16 =?
Solution:
We use the formula,
n
Sn= ¿
2
By substituting the given values in the
formula :
16
S16 = [2 ( 8 )+ 3 ( 16−1 ) ]
2
¿ 8 [16+3 ( 15 ) ]
¿ 8 ( 16+ 45 )
¿ 8 ( 61 )
S16 =488
The sum of the first 10 terms of the series
is 488.

GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE

- A sequence in which term after the

first is formed by multiplying a fixed
number to the preceding term
- The fixed number of constant is
called the common ratio denoted by
d
To identify the missing term:
First, you must have to find the
common ratio.
If the unknown value is a
succeeding term, then multiply
the preceding term to the common
ratio.
If the unknown value is a
preceding term, then divide the
succeeding term by the common
ratio.
Example
a. 3 , 12, 48 ,¿
The missing term is a succeeding
term and comes after 48.
The common ratio is 4.
To obtain the missing term, multiply
48 to 4.
Therefore, the missing term in the
geometric sequence is 192.
b. ____ , 32 ,64 ,128
The missing term is a preceding
term and comes before 32.
The common ratio is 2.
To obtain the missing term, divide
32 by 2.
Therefore, the missing term in the
geometric sequence is 16.
