Rubella
History
1881 Rubella accepted as a distinct disease
• Maculopapular rash
• Lymphadenopathy
• Fever
• Arthropathy (up to 60% of cases)
Risks of rubella infection during pregnancy
Antenatal screening
• The single vaccine is recommended for girls before marriage and for seronegative
women after delivery.
• Primary infection usually asymptomatic. Virus then becomes latent and is reactivated from time to time.
• Transmitted by infected saliva, breast milk, sexually, transplacental and through infected blood and organ
transplantation.
• 60% of the population eventually become infected. In some developing countries, the figure is up to 95%.
Congenital Infection
• dsDNA genome
• Icosahedral capsid
• Enveloped; nuclear
membrane
• HSV-1 and -2
Giant cell induced by HSV
Neonatal Herpes Simplex
• RNA virus
• Main problem is in
intravenous drug users
and their partners
• Vertical transmission in
approx. 25% of infected
women - intrauterine/at
delivery - now 7% with
AZT
