Modifying Eating
Habits
Eating is an international act. Each day people
choose from available food, prepare food, decide
where to eat, and whom to dine with. These make up
your eating habits.

Convenience is only factor that drives food choices.


Some of the factors are:
Advertising
Availability
Economy
Emotional Comport
Habit
Personal preference
Some of the factors are:

Positive Associations
Region/Location
Social Pressure
Values/Beliefs
Weight
Nutrional Value
The last two factors are highly viable
to nutrition health. Similarly , the
choice of where, as well as what to
eat, is often based more on social
consideration than nutritional
judgement. Hence, we should be more
conscious of the factors that affect
your own personal food choices.
Poor food choices
contribute directly to
obesity, heart
disease, diabetes,
cancer, and other
health problems.
Understanding the importance of
food choices becomes more critical
as a greater number of people rely
on convenience food, take out
meals, and eating out.
Poor diet coupled with
lack of exercise
contributes to an
increased risk of
diseases.
There are different factors that greatly
affect the weight of an individual like
heredity, food preferences, selection,
amount of everyday physical activities,
and eating habits. Establishing good
eating habits should start at home from
the very early stage of life, especially in
children.
The parents should encourage their children to eat a varied
diet which includes the following:
Plain mildly flavored food cooked in moderate amount
of fats or oils
A glass of milk to meet the calcium, protein, and
vitamin B needed daily.
A good daily breakfast composed of body-building,
enrgy-giving, and regulating food
Food fortified with vitamins like vitamin A or beta-
carotene and vitamin C, and minerals like iron and
iodine
Nutritious school snacks and lunch
What nutritional guidelines can be observed as
part of healthful eating habits?
1. Eat a variety of food every day
2. Maintain children’s normal growth through
proper diet and monitor their growth
regularly
3. Consume fish, lean meat, poultry, and dried
beans
4. Eat more vegetables, fruits and root crops

5. Eat a variety of food cooked in edible or cooking oil


6. Consume milk, milk products and other food rich in
calcium
7. Use iodized salt, but avoid excessive intake of
salty food
8. Eat clean and safe food
9. Exercise regularly, do not smoke, and avoid
drinking alcoholic beverages
