1. GENERAL
1.1. Efficiency / compactness
After installation OPTIMA-24 needs up to 25% less space in the switchgear room than air-insulated switchgear currently manufactured.
Application of OPTIMA-24 switchgear in the existing stations / switchgear rooms has many benefits:
n the switchgear rooms or stations may house twice as many SF6-insulated panels that of older-type switchgear,
n efficient use of the existing switchgear rooms and stations, with no need for their extension,
n economic use of the space in municipal areas.

Deciding to install OPTIMA-24 switchgear in newly designed rooms their size can be considerably minimized, in their length, width and
height, what brings substantial project savings.
Low maintenance costs owing to self-operating switchgear compartments filled with the SF6 gas and provided with vacuum circuit-
breakers characterized with high electrical endurance.

3. MONITORING SYSTEM
3.1. Insulating gas monitoring
Pressure of the insulating gas in each vessel is measured with a pressure gauge [18] with auxiliary contacts, mounted inside the
compartment of switch operating mechanisms. The drawing below shows a method of mounting the gauge in the panel. Each panel is
provided with a pressure gauge. Indications of the gauge can be observed through the inspection window on the front cover of the
compartment. Operating personnel can locally identify a panel's readiness for service from colour indications on the gauge:
n green indicator – “ready”,
n yellow indicator – “warning”,
n red indicator – “alarm”.

Whenever a boundary between colours is exceeded, the auxiliary contacts are switched to signal relevant alarm states, which may be
used in the signaling circuits.
An allowable annual loss of SF6 gas < 0.1%.

3.2. Voltage indicators

Voltage indicators are fit for cooperation with a reactance or resistance insulator. The indicators are connected to bushings mounted
inside:
n on the busbars side: busbar system bushing [7],
n on the cable connections side: cable connection bushing [8].

Voltage indicators are used to check:

n voltage presence - they detect presence or lack of voltage,
n in cooperation with the PB relay possibility of use in electrical interlocking systems.

Voltage indicator type WN is fit for work with reactance insulators. An optical element which signals
voltage presence in each phase is based on three electroluminescent diodes on the front of the relay. The
front panel of the WN indicator houses test sockets to which an external portable voltage indicator can be
plugged (e.g. WNf indicator manufactured by ENERGOTEST sp. z o.o.), which can also be used for phase
comparison.
PB switching interlock relay cooperates with reactance insulators. Fitted for detecting voltage
presence; it is fitted for cooperation with the coil interlocking the earthing switch closing, preventing the
earthing switch from closing in the case of voltage presence on its contacts.
Use of other type voltage indicator is possible.

Main features of voltage indicators:

n the indicators cooperate with insulators of different manufacturers,
n voltage present indication is realized for each phase, Voltage indicator type WN
n the indicators are provided with test sockets for phase comparison,
n the detection system needs no separate power supply, it is energized from the connected
reactance insulators,
n the detection system is independent of the interlocking system (failure of the interlocking system
does not break the operation of the detection system) - refers to PB relay.

Stationary voltage indicators provide high degree of safety for switchgear operators. A stationary
voltage indicator included capacitance insulators connected to the voltage indicator socket mounted
on the front cover of the auxiliary circuits compartment.

4.2. Busbar system compartment
The busbar system compartment is situated directly above the gas compartment – vessel of main circuits and is separated from other
compartments by metallic partitions. The bottom part of the compartment houses tight bushing insulators of busbars [7] on which the
insulated busbar system is mounted [1]. The busbar system is made of a round copper bar in silicone rubber insulation connected directly on
the busbar bushings [7] using special cross and end adapters. The busbar system enclosure has silicone rubber insulation. Surfaces of busbar
system enclosure are earthed to the designated earthing point in the upper part of the gas compartment. Upper cover of the busbar system
compartment [25] has standard ventillation openings which, appropriately arranged with a counter-cover, provide tightness of IP 4X.

4.4. Gas compartment
The gas compartment is situated in the centre of switchgear construction, it houses switching equipment of the primary circuit. The
compartment enclosure is made of 3 mm stainless steel sheet, suitably reinforced from inside and outside provides stability and durability of
the construction. The sheet steel plates are joined by welding, providing tightness on the level of IP 67.
Standard gas compartment of an outgoing cubicle includes:
n circuit breaker vacuum chamber [3],
n three-position switch [4],

n two-position switch of voltage transformers [14] (option– only when plug–in voltage transformers [15] are mounted inside the
connection compartment).

The compartment houses the vacuum circuit breaker poles, separated from the operating mechanism with a tight partition, three-
position switch [4], two-position switch of voltage transformers [14] and adequately shaped copper bars [21]. The switchgear construction is
fitted for installation of a vacuum circuit breaker type: GMX-S or VEP.
Tight bushings of the busbar system [7] are mounted on the connection between the gas compartment and the busbar compartment.
Similar bushings for voltage transformers [9] and for cable connection [8] are used on the entrance to the connection compartment.
Bushings of the cable connections [8] are of various length.
Switching devices built in inside the compartment depend on the rated current of the panel (630 ÷ 2500 A). Operating shaft of a three-
position switch [4] is entered into the gas compartment through special sealing which guarantees adequate tightness throughout the whole
service life of the switchgear.
In the rear of the compartment there is a safety membrane [17] which provides protection for the vessel against sudden pressure
increase due to arc-fault inside the gas compartment. Gases will be evacuated through the pressure relief duct to the top and outside the
switchgear.
On the front of the panel a manometer - pressure gauge [20] is built-in, it signals the level of gas pressure with the use of microswitches
(“ready”, “warning”, “alarm”).

Each gas compartment has an integrated valve for:

n connecting the gas monitoring system,
n gas recovery during decommissioning of the switchgear.

Main features of the gas compartment:

n self-operating,
n made of stainless steel,
n tight for life,

Current transformers
Applied in switchgear type OPTIMA-24 single pole, toroidal current transformers are
mounted outside the gas compartment. Wires from the instrument transformers are entered
directly into the auxiliary circuits compartment, without any intermediate connections. The 6
transformers applied in the switchgear are listed in chapter 6.1.

Current transformers in the connection compartment

n As a standard, transformers are mounted on the extended cable connection.
n Easy replacement of transformers.
n Maximum length of a current transformer to be mounted on the interface type “C”: 214 mm.
6
n Maximum length of a current transformer to be mounted on the interface type “F”: 150 mm.
n In the case of transformer with a big number of secondary windings, which enclosure exceeds
the maximum allowable length, an additional transformer is mounted on the outgoing cable.

Voltage transformers
n Wires from the instrument transformers are entered directly into the auxiliary circuits
compartment, without any intermediate connections.
n 1-pole transformers.
n Transformers with earthed metal coating, plug-in, disconnectable type.
Current transformers [6]
Installation of voltage transformers in the connection compartment
n As a standard, voltage transformers are mounted in the connection compartment, on a pin of
a type A bushing [9].
n As a standard, voltage transformers in the primary circuit are switched on by a two-position
switch [14], mounted outside the gas compartment.
n Standard design enables measurements without removing the transformer from the
connection compartment. 10
n Voltage transformers are mounted outside the gas compartment.
n Possibility to replace a transformer when a fuse-link is damaged or blown.
n Possibility mounting of voltage transformers with unreplaceable fuse-links on the pin of
bushing type A [9].

Two-position switch of voltage transformers

n Operation of the two-position switch [14] with the use of operating mechanism of the two-
position switch [10]. Access to the operating mechanism is possible after removal of the
connection compartment cover.
n In its „earthed” position the primary side of the transformer is earthed.
n Possibility of padlocking the operating mechanism in two positions.
n A two-position switch of voltage transformers [14] in the gas compartment is always
mounted at the voltage transformer normally installed on bushings of voltage transformers Operating mechanism of a two-position switch [10]
[9].
n If the panel is not provided with voltage transformers, bushing pins [9] are protected with
insulating plugs.

Additional possibility of mounting voltage transformers in the connection compartment

n Installation of one voltage transformer (connected to the connector heads) for phase-to-
phase voltage testing. 15
n Installation of voltage transformers without fuse-links in the existing switchgear panels
subject to easy access to the connection compartment, i.e. a possibility to withdraw MV
cables from the compartment or access from the rear of the free-standing switchgear and
a possibility to connect a set of additional connector cable heads type T((K) 430 TB).
n Connecting voltage transformers located outside the switchgear if the number of cable
connections is not greater than the maximum allowable number of cables.
n Mounting of voltage transformers with unreplaceable fuse-links connected to connector
heads involves increasing the switchgear height by 125 mm.
Voltage transformers [15] of a metering panel
Voltage transformers in the metering panel
n Voltage transformers [15] mounted in the metering panel are protected with replaceable
fuse-links placed in special insulating enclosures [27].
n Replacement of a fuse-link after switching the three-position switch to “earthed” position.
n Earthing is made on both sides of the fuse-link enclosure, voltage transformer and the 28
internal busbars are earthed.

4.6. Switch operating mechanisms compartment
The operating mechanisms compartment is situated in the front part of the switchgear. The compartment is separated from the other
compartments by metallic partitions which provide suitable degree of protection. Wires of the switchgear control circuits run across the
compartment.
The operating mechanisms compartment can house various elements:
n napęd zasobnikowo sprężynowy wyłącznika próżniowego typu GMX-S, VEP,
n spring loaded operating mechanism of the three-position switch:
§manual actuating mechanisms, operating a disconnector and a circuit breaker with the use of a removable operating lever,,
n motor operating mechanism of a three-position switch (option):
§motor operating mechanism of a disconnector (in this design an earthing switch is manually operated),
§motor operating mechanisms of a disconnector and an earthing switch,
n electromagnetic interlocks of the socket of manual operating mechanism of a disconnector and/or earthing switch (option) of the three-
position switch,
n electromagnetic interlock of the socket of manual operating mechanism of busbar system earthing switch,,
n manometer for control of the insulation gas SF6,
n mechanical interlocks between switches which eliminate operator errors,
n a front cover with a synoptic diagram.
The equipment depends on the type of a panel.

Preparation of the room for switchgear installation consists of:

n completion of civil works and painting, completion of ventilation, water and sewage works,
n installation of the lighting system,
n mounting and leveling the foundation frames,
n providing a suitable door opening (recommended dimensions: dimensions of a switchgear panel + 200 mm on the width and on the
height),
n ensuring that the entrance door can be locked or padlocked,
n for the free-standing switchgear - providing a required operating gangway with suitable width on the back.

24
8. INSTALLATION
The PN-EN 62271-200 standards specifies minimum admissible installation conditions for switchgear with classification of internal
arcing resistance IAC. It is forbidden to install the switchgear in rooms which do not meet the relevant requirements of the standard. A
drawing below shows the method of mounting OPTIMA-24 switchgear on the raised floor.

Preparation of the room for installing OPTIMA-24 switchgear consists in ensuring suitable door opening (recommended dimensions:
dimensions of a switchgear panel + 200 mm on the width and on the height). Please contact us if, for any reason, the dimension cannot be
assured.
Minimal dimensions of door [1] in the switchroom:
n width: 800; 1100 mm,
n height: 2650 mm (2350, 2500 - in the case of a lowered auxiliary circuit compartment).
It must be considered whether the switchgear is provided with higher auxiliary circuits compartment or additional voltage transformers
cabinet on the top, above the busbar compartment. Height of the auxiliary circuits compartment may be increased by 150 or 300 mm, while
an additional cabinet with voltage transformers is 300 mm high. These dimensions must be taken into account in designing the switchgear
room.

Minimal distance between the switchgear sections in the switchroom is 1500 mm (for a typical panel depth). Dimensions of a cable duct
[2] or cables space depending on the minimal bend radius of MV cables:
n depth of switchgear panel,
n width of the operating gangway.

9. DESIGNING
ELEKTROBUDOWA SA offers designing of the switchgear.
It is advised to get acquainted with the following recommendations before starting to design OPTIMA-24 switchgear. Standard
diagrams are presented in the switchgear catalogue. The technical specification required for manufacture of the switchgear must
include:
n technical description of the switchgear;
n main circuits diagram indicating the selection of devices and connections (types, quantity, cross-section, load capacity; the
method of cable connections routing and phase sequence for each cell);
n development of auxiliary circuits:
§selection of devices,
§schematic diagrams and installation drawings,
§arrangement of equipment,
§the way of entering the auxiliary circuit cables (type, quantity, size),
n summary of equipment of the main and auxiliary circuits in electronic form;
n drawings of foundation and arrangement of panels in the room;
n a list of descriptions of switchgear panels application, numbering and process descriptions;
n colours of front covers (our standard colour is RAL 7032 grey);
n description of external inputs/outputs of the programmable controller;
n defining, either in descriptive or graphic form, logical – time relationships of the programmable controller, accounting for
relations with external signals and internal (logic) signals of the controller.

In the standard design, ELEKTROBUDOWA SA makes connections between devices with the use of single-core conductors (stranded
copper wire) following the rule:
2
n 0,75 mm control and signalling circuits,
2
n 1,5 mm auxiliary circuits of voltage transformers,
2
n 2,5 mm auxiliary circuits of current transformers.
On request, it is possible to use a conductor of different size or type.
External installations and foundation frames are subject to separate agreement. Other than offered in the catalogue equipment of
switchgear panels must be agreed with the Construction Department (TR) in Konin.

10. TRANSPORT
The switchgear is adjusted to road transport. Another means of transport, such as a container or ship, shall be specified together
with the order. A transport set includes one switchgear panel (functional unit). Weight of one transport set as in the table, chapter 5.
Devices which are not shock-resistant, busbar system and additional equipment (levers, keys, etc.) are shipped in separate packages.
Loading and unloading with the use of a hoisting or travelling crane. The switchgear should be transported directly to a suitable
prepared switchroom.

11. ORDERING
An order should include technical data of the switchgear and a technical specification prepared according to the guidelines in
chapter 9 “DESIGNING”.
