1. Explain the purpose and procedure to the client.

2. Perform hand hygiene. (R: To prevent the spread of infection.)
3. Wear gloves.
4. Prepare all the required equipment and bring the articles to the bedside. (R:
Organization facilitates accurate skill performance.)
5. Move the chair and bedside locker. (R: To make space for bed making and to help for
effective action.)
6. Clean the bedside locker. Wipe it wet then wipe it dry. (R: To maintain cleanliness)
7. Clean the mattress. (R: To prevent the spread of infection.)
a. Stand at the right side.
b. Start wet wiping from top to center and from center to bottom at the right side of the
mattress.
c. Gather the dust and debris towards the bottom.
d. Collect them into the kidney tray.
e. Give dry wiping using the same procedure in (b).
f. Move to the left side.
g. Wipe with wet and dry at the left side.

8. Move to the right side.


Bottom Sheet
a. Place and slide the bottom sheet upward over the top of the bed, leaving the bottom
edge of the sheet. (R: Unfolding the sheet in this manner allows you to make the bed on
one side.)
b. Open it in lengthwise with the centerfold along the bed center.
c. Fold back the upper layer of the sheet toward the opposite side of the bed.
d. Tuck the bottom sheet securely under the head of the mattress (approximately 20-
30cm.) Make a mitered corner. (R: A mitered corner has a neat appearance and keeps
the sheet securely under the mattress.)
Mitering
● Pick up the selvage edge with your hand nearest the hand of the bed.
● Lay a triangle over the side of the bed.
● Tuck the hanging part of the sheet under the mattress. (R: To secure the bottom sheet
on one side of the bed.)
● Drop the triangle over the side of the bed.
● Tuck the sheet under the entire side of the bed.
● Repeat the same procedure at the end of the corner of the bed.
● Tuck the remainder along the side of the bed.
9. Mackintosh and Draw sheet. (R: Mackintosh and draw sheet are additional protection
for the bed and serves as lifting or turning sheet for an immobile client.)
a. Place a mackintosh at the middle of the bed (if used), folded half, with the fold in the
center of the bed used)
b. Lift the right half and spread it forward the near side.
c. Tuck the mackintosh under the mattress.
d. Place the draw sheet on the mackintosh. Spread and tuck as same as procedure a-c.
10. Move to the left side of the bed. (R: Secure the bottom sheet, mackintosh and drawsheet
on one side of the bed.)
Bottom sheet, mackintosh and draw sheet
a. Fold and tuck the bottom sheet as in the above procedure 7.
b. Fold and tuck both the mackintosh and the draw sheet under the mattress as in the
above procedure 8.
11. Return to the right side.
Top sheet and blanket (R: A blanket provides warmth.)
a. Place the top sheet evenly on the bed, centering it in below 20-30 cm from the top of the
mattress.
b. Spread it downward.
c. Cover the top sheet with blanket in the below1 feet from the top of the mattress and
spread downward.
d. Fold the cuff (approximately 1 feet) in the neck part. (R: Making the cuff at the neck part
prevents irritation from blanket.)
e. Tuck all these together under the bottom of mattress. Miter the corner. (R: Tucking all
these pieces together saves time and provides a neat appearance.)
f. Tuck the remainder along the side.

12. Repeat the same procedure above (procedure 11) at the left side. (R: To save time.)
13. Return to the right side.
Pillow and Pillow Cover: (R: A pillow is a comfortable measure.)
a. Put a clean pillow cover on the pillow. (R: Pillow cover keeps cleanliness of the pillow
and keeps it neat.)
i. Grasp the closed end of the pillowcase at the center with one hand.
ii. Gather up the sides of the pillowcase and place them over the hand grasping
the case. Then grasp the center of one short side of the pillow through the
pillowcase. ❼
iii. With the free hand, pull the pillowcase over the pillow.
iv. Adjust the pillowcase so that the pillow fits into the corners of the case and
the seams are straight. Rationale: A smoothly fitting pillowcase is more
comfortable than a wrinkled one.
v. Place the pillows appropriately at the head of the bed.

b. Place a pillow at the top of the bed at the center with the open end away from the
door. (R: The open end may collect dust or microorganisms. The open end away
from the door also makes it neat.)

14. Return the bed, the chair, and bedside table to the proper place. (R: Bedside necessities
will be within reach of the client.)
15. Replace all equipment and put in proper place. Discard linens appropriately. (R: To put
things in order and easily accessible for the next caregiver who will perform bed-
making.) (R: Proper line disposal prevents the spread of infection.)
16. Perform hand hygiene/hand washing. (R: To prevent the spread of infection.)
