Week 2: Group Learnt Dance – Written task

At the beginning of this dance phrase all of the dancers spread out symmetrically on either
side of the main trio, (the two male dancers and the female). The trio are situated in the
middle of the stage, right up the front. The lead female dancer begins in the rake position,
her torso angled, right leg turned out, and left hand dropped at the wrist. She turns to face
the back and slides her arms down by her side and begins to perform the Fosse wrist sway -
small, controlled movements in front of her body and then behind her back. These wrist
sways show the intention of the dancer appearing reserved and therefore aloof.
Another example showing the dance intention is when the lead female dancer stands in a
side on position and the front of the stage, bending both knees forward and holding both
arms rigidly behind her back whilst moving her arms forwards and backwards incorporating
the wrist sway. At the same time she moves her hips back and forth communicating a bored,
cool and snobbish appearance. This movement is performed in unison showing the group
conforming to the socially acceptable ways of thinking and behaving and expressing
boredom of the rich and famous.
