Lifting Operations

many industries. Lifting operations are high-risk operations that involve lifting equipment
such as:
• Lorry cranes (or lorry loaders)
• Gantry cranes
• Overhead travelling cranes

Lifting Operations
Safety pointers to take note when involve in a lifting
operation;
1. Follow the lifting plan and instructions closely. A
lifting plan must be established before every lifting
operation. If there is no lifting plan OR if the lifting
plan has not been communicated to you, do not
proceed with the lifting operation.
2. Check all lifting equipment, accessories and gears
are in good working condition before starting the
lifting operation. If you spot any defects, report to
your supervisor immediately.
3. The proper deployment of the outriggers will
provide the necessary stability and balance to
prevent the lorry crane from toppling during a lifting
operation.

Lifting Operations
Safety pointers to take note when involve in a lifting
operation;
4. Always ensure that the load is rigged up such that
it is stable, balanced (with the centre of gravity
beneath the hook) and secured (i.e. the load will
not slip during the lift).
5. Never position yourself under a suspended load at
any time. Demarcate (and barricade whenever
possible) the lifting zone to ensure that no
unauthorised persons enter the zone while the
lifting operation is in progress.
