TYPES OF HAJJ
 Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, which there is a series of acts of worship
performed by every Muslim in the world who can afford it. The difference between the major
and minor pilgrimages is that there is a specific time for Hajj which is not the case with
Umrah. We can perform Umrah at any time in the year. Able in the sense of having the
ability physically, financially and knowledgeably on the procedure of performing the
pilgrimage. Then, we should know the types of Hajj as our basic knowledge of it.
Types of Hajj consist of three types which are:
1) Hajj Tamattu’- The performer of this Hajj is called a Mutamatti.
2) Hajj Ifrad - A person performing Ifrad Hajj is called Mufrid.
3) Hajj Qiran – The person who performs Qiran is called a Qarin.

This types of Hajj can be request from the people who want to perform it to the
Pilgrimage Management or if not they will do the intention (‫ )النية‬based on their boarding time
and date whether it soon or late coming there.
Hajj Tamattu’ is where a pilgrim starts first by performing Umrah before performing Hajj
which a person who performs ihram to perform umrah in the months of Hajj (the month of
Syawal, Dzul Qaedah, the first 10 days of the month of Dzul Hijjah), when entering the city
of Mecca and then complete his umrah by performing thowaf umrah, sa'i then umrah then
bertahallul from his ihram by cutting short or shaving part of his head hair. On the day of
Tarwiyah, which is the eighth of Dzul Hijjah, they put on the Ihram again, but this time for
Hajj only and carry out all of its requirements.
Hajj Ifrad is a person who intends to perform Hajj only without umrah in the month of
Hajj, in other words perform Hajj and Umrah separately or individually, by performing Hajj
first, and then perform Umrah in one Hajj season.
Hajj Qiran is a person who intends to perform Hajj and Umrah at the same time, which is
performed during the months of Hajj, in other words, ihram to perform Umrah and Hajj
simultaneously. Frequently, this type of Hajj will be perform by sick person (‘uzur), or a busy
person which cannot make more than 2 weeks at Makkah. The pilgrim who performs this kind of
Hajj is called a Qarin.

For the conclusion, based on the three types of Hajj, the best performance of Hajj is Hajj
Tamattu’. It is the form that the Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged his followers to
perform.
