Name: _________________________________________________ Course: ______________

Which type of heat transfer is taking place? Write Conduction, Convection, or Radiation in the blank
spaces to show the type of heat transfer.

Convection
1. _________________ hot water rises and cold water
sinks

conduction
2. _________________ stir frying vegetables

conduction
3. _________________ a spoon in a cup of hot soup
becomes warmer

radiation
4. _________________ grilling hamburgers over a
charcoal flame

convection
5. _________________ hot air balloon rises

radiation
6. _________________ you feel the heat from a
campfire

conduction
7. _________________ a raw egg begins to fry as it hits a
heated frying pan

Heated air rises, cools,

then
convection
8. _________________ falls. Air near heater is
replaced by cooler air, and the
cycle repeats.

conduction
9. _________________ boiling potatoes in water

radiation
10. _________________ microwave oven

radiation
11. _________________ propane heater

convection
12. _________________ basement is cooler than attic

radiation
13. _________________ radiator warms your hands

convection
14. _________________ a person takes a warm bath

radiation
15. _________________ heat from a light bulb

convection
16. _________________ hot pan is cooled by running it
under cold water

radiation
17. _________________ you get sunburned

convection
18. _________________ warm water at the surface of
the
swimming
pool

conduction
19. _________________ irons

convection
20. _________________ wind currents

II. Solve the given word problems.

1. Given the voltage of 120 volts an a current of 5 amps, what is the resistance?
R=120/5 =24ohms
2. If the current is 30 amps an the voltage is 12 , solve for the resistance.

R = V/I =12 volt/30amp = 0.4 ohm

V= I×R
3. If the current is 10 amps an the resistance is 3 ohms, what is the voltage? = 10 ampere × 3 ohm
= 30 volt
4. If a battery in a circuit is 24 volts an the resistance is 12 ohms, what is the current?
I = V/R = 24v/12ohm = 2 ampere
5. House current is 120 volts. If a light bulb runs a current of 0.5 amps, what is the resistance of
the bulb? R = V/I = 120 volt/0.5 amps = 240 ohm

III. Convert the following numbers from degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit.

1. 0 °C 1. (0°C × 9/5) + 32 = 32°F

2. 32 °C 2. (32°C × 9/5) + 32 = 89.6°F
3. 79°C 3. (79°C × 9/5) + 32 = 174.2°F
4. (98.6°C × 9/5) + 32 = 209.48°F
4. 98.6°C 5. (100°C × 9/5) + 32 = 212°F
5. 100°C
