ACTIVE AND PASSIVE MEANINGS
ACTIVE The subject does the action of the verb.
PASSIVE The subject receives the action of the verb.

Follow the steps below to form passive sentences:


1. Change the object of an active sentence into the subject of the passive sentence.
2. Change the verb to include a form BE and the past participle (V3) of the active verb.
3. Delete the active sentence subject or place it after the preposition by.
Examples 1:
1 Rina eats rice and satay every day. Rice and satay are eaten by Rina every day.

2 Two thieves stole a bicycle in the parking area. A bicycle was stolen by two thieves in the
parking area.

PRACTICE 1: Underline the active verbs once and the passive verbs twice.
THE OLYMPICS
The word ”Olympics” comes from the name of town. Olympics in Greece, where the acient
Olympic games were always held. The first recorded Olympic games were held in 776 BC. The games
took place every fourth year after that date until they were abolished by Roman Emperor in A. D. 394 .
It was until 1875 when archeologists discovered the ruins of the Olympic stadium in Greece.
That interest in the games was renewed by Baron Pierre Coubertin, a French scholar
and educator, who proposed that the games should be revival as an international competition to
encourage both sport and world piece.
The first modern Olympic games were held in Athens in 1896 like their clasiccal predeceased
the athletes were men only. Women were admitted to the games in 1900. Since that time the games have
been held at four year intervals as in incent Greece. However since De Coubertin’s dream of world
peace has not been realized, the two World Wars prevented those of 1916 – 1940 and 1944 from being
led.
The Olympic games have been confined to amateur athletes despites a few recent exceptions.
There are pressures on the Olympic Authorities to admit other professionals. To the games such a step
