- Opposing Transitions
- Causal Transitions
- Sequential Transitions
Okay, very good!

Now, can anyone define Additive

Transitions and give an
example?
- Words/phrases that
signal addition of ideas
regarding to the preceding
text.
- and, such as, also,
moreover, etc.

Then, pick-out phrases or

words joined by the
conjunctions. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of
paper.

B. Lesson Proper
I asked you earlier to pick-out
words and phrases that was joined
by the conjunctions. This
afternoon we will discuss about
parallelism.

Any idea about parallelism or

parallel structure in sentence?
- Answers may vary

Do you still remember what the

sentence elements are?
- Subject
- Direct object
- Indirect object
- Subject complement
Let’s try these sentences for you to
understand more the sentence
elements

Daniel bought a flowers for her

mother.

- Daniel represents the

subject
- bought a flowers represents
direct object
- for her mother is the
indirect object in the
sentence.

The classroom is so messy.

- The classroom stands as the

subject.
- so messy stands as subject
complement.
- While is stands as the
linking verb in the sentence.

Based on the given sentences,

subject is the doer of the action or
the topic in a sentence.

While direct object is the action

that the subject did in a sentence.

And indirect object is the receiver

of the action in a sentence.

Lastly, subject complement. It

completes the sentence by

Do you now understand more?
- Yes, Sir!
Now, let’s move on to Parallel
structure in sentence.

I have here two sentence:

I am allergic to the dog’s hair and

how it smells.

I am allergic to dog’s hair and

smell.

In terms of parallel structure, what

do you think is the correct
construction of sentence here, the
first or second sentence?
- The second sentence, I am
allergic to dog’s hair and
smell.
Okay, very good!

First rule in parallelism. Parallel

structure should be used elements
are joined by coordinating
conjunctions.

Since, there is a coordinating

conjunction in our sentence and it
joined the same element in the
sentence earlier, the first rule
should be applied.

The other coordinating

conjunctions are what we called
FANBOYS.

F- FOR
A- AND
N- NEITHER
B- BUT
O- OR
Y- YET
S- SO

Can you give me a parallel

structure of sentence based on our

first rule.
- Answers may vary
Very good!

Now, let’s move on to the next rule.

Parallel structure should be used

when writing elements in the form
of a list or a series.

The class loves listening, watching,

and to write.

The class loves listening, watching,

and writing.

Always remember that to use

parallel structure, you should be
consistent. If you use infinitive at
the beginning of the series or list,
use infinitive all throughout the
sentence in that particular
element. The same with gerund,
use gerund if you used it at the
beginning of list or series.

Okay, who wants to give their

example for the second rule?
- Answers may vary
Very good!

Moving on to the next rule,

Parallel structure should be used

when comparing or contrasting
elements.

James enjoys reading more than to

write.

James enjoys reading more than

writing.

In comparing and contrasting,

observe the use of parallel
structure for more grammatically
balanced sentence.
