QUIZ 4
1. What is Cardiovascular Endurance?

Cardiovascular endurance, also known as aerobic endurance, is defined as

"the ability of the cardiovascular system to deliver oxygen to working muscles
during sustained physical activity" (Caspersen, Powell, & Christenson, 1985).

This involves the heart, lungs, and blood vessels working together to deliver
oxygen and nutrients to the muscles, which allows them to perform work for
an extended period of time. The aerobic energy system is the primary system
used during cardiovascular endurance exercise, which utilizes oxygen to
produce energy and maintain prolonged activity.

Regular physical activity that involves sustained cardiovascular endurance

exercise has been shown to improve overall health and reduce the risk of
chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity (Warburton,
Nicol, & Bredin, 2006).

2. Does every workout that makes your heart pump up can be considered as
cardiovascular endurance exercise?

Not every workout that makes your heart pump up can be considered as
cardiovascular endurance exercise. While any form of physical activity that
elevates the heart rate and causes the body to work harder will result in an
increase in cardiovascular function to some extent, true cardiovascular
endurance exercise involves sustained activity that challenges the
cardiovascular system for an extended period of time.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM),

cardiovascular endurance exercise should meet certain criteria to be
considered as such, including involving large muscle groups, being performed
continuously for at least 20-30 minutes, and maintaining a heart rate of 60-
85% of maximum heart rate (ACSM, 2018).

Examples of activities that meet these criteria include running, cycling,

swimming, and brisk walking. These activities involve sustained effort over an
extended period of time, which helps to build cardiovascular endurance and
improve overall fitness.
