NEGATIVE TRENDS

1. There is an even more pronounced return to the ‘central place of grammar in the
language curriculum’ (Soars and Soars, 1996).

 Only grammar-related disciplines are given priority in the language curriculum. In

such a case, we'll disregard the other skills that English language learners need to
develop.

2. Greater prominence given in the teaching of speaking and listening.

 Lot of course books focus on or give activities that could improve students' speaking
and listening skills while neglecting their reading and writing, and I think that's true
in class as well. We need to balance these four macro skills.

3. Learners have short attention span.

 Attention span is the length of time in spending on a task before becoming

distracted. Thus if our students have a short attention span, it suggests they have
problems concentrating on the topic at hand or on our English lecture.

4. Learners do not gain if they are engaged in intellectually demanding activities.

 There is a theory that if learners are overwhelmed with intellectually challenging

activities while they're learning a language. Thus, they will not learn.

5. Neglect in the use of literature.

 If we don't include literature in the readings or other course materials, we won't be

able to improve or enhance the learner's effective skill.

6. Predominance of analytical activities.

 A learner's preferred style of knowledge processing, comprehension, and retention

is known as their learning style. Therefore, there is a chance that other learners
won't benefit from or learn from activities tailored to different learning styles when
we disregard them.

7. Absence of controversial issues.

 We don't address current events or include sensitive issues that students could
discuss and engage in conversation. Therefore, it would be much better if we
allowed our students to speak and use the target language. It offers them the best
opportunity to use and practice the language.

8. We underestimate our learners.

 When possible, we should not underestimate our learners because doing so will
likely lead to creating materials that are not at all of their interest. We would not
want that to happen.

9. Focus on English as used by Native speakers.

 Most of the curriculum still place a strong emphasis on teaching English in its native
context. Therefore they generally continue to discuss regarding English in terms of
how it is used by native speakers or in native-speaking countries.
