Angular Momentum
Angular Momentum
1/16/2020 1
• In analogy to the principle of conservation of
linear momentum, the angular momentum of
a system is conserved if no external torques
act on the system
• Consider a particle of mass m located at the
vector position r and moving with linear
momentum p
• The net force on the particle equals the time
rate of change of its linear momentum,
1/16/2020 2
• The cross product of with r, gives the net
torque on the particle

Thus,
This looks very similar in form to Equation
Thus,

• If we differentiate this equation with respect to
time, we get

Angular Momentum of a
Rotating Rigid Object
• Each particle of the object
rotates in the xy plane
about the z axis with an
angular speed ω
• The magnitude of the
angular momentum of a
particle of mass mi about
the z axis is miviri
• Since vi = riω, the magnitude
of the angular momentum
of this particle is given by

• The angular momentum of the whole object is
given by
Also,
Therefore,

Conservation of Angular Momentum
• Recall that, the total linear momentum of a system
of particles remains constant if the system is
isolated, that is, if the resultant external force
acting on the system is zero.
• Analogously we have conservation law in rotational
motion which states that,
The total angular momentum of a system is constant
in both magnitude and direction if the resultant
external torque acting on the system is zero, that is, if
the system is isolated

• That is,
Then,

• Thus we can express the principle of
conservation of angular momentum as
