Vaccines play an important role to achieve sufficient herd

immunity to Corona virus infection to ultimately combat
the pandemic. However, misinformation and
unsubstantiated rumors regarding COVID-19 vaccines
have been around and repeatedly shared on social media
platforms even before the release of an effective vaccine.

According to Philippine News Agency, as of July 27, more

than 71.6 million Filipinos are fully vaccinated against
COVID-19 in the Philippines, which means 65.3% of the
02 population has been vaccinated.

One of the main causes of the citizens' reluctance is the

abundance of inaccurate information on the internet.
The posts on social media that are posted randomly by
people regarding the effects of vaccinations, with no
supporting scientific evidence other than hearsay,
spread fear like wildfires. It is necessary to analyze
public's vaccine intelligence in order to promote
acceptance towards it.

Hesitancy and waning of general public confidence towards the

COVID-19 vaccine is currently one of the major catastrophes
that the public health authorities experienced. Vaccine
hesitancy is described as a reluctance or refusal to vaccinate
despite the availability of vaccines, and has been classified as
one of the ten most serious current health hazards. Acceptance
of vaccines is still questionable despite the government's efforts
to increase vaccination availability in order to achieve herd
immunity.

In view of the preceding situation, researchers suggest it

would be an excellent concept to assess how well those
who have not received the COVID-19 vaccination are aware
of the consequences of the vaccine.

In doing so, the study would be able to establish if the

respondents' hesitancy about receiving the COVID-19
vaccination are purely the result of ignorance, unreliable
information, fear, or illogical personal convictions.

Based on the study about Potential Factors

Influencing COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and
hesitancy that was published, one of the potential
factors that influence COVID-19 vaccine acceptance
and hesitancy is “information sufficiency”. This one is
one of the major contributors why people tend to
refuse vaccine shots.

According to the 2021 The World Bank's High Frequency

Monitoring (HFM) Surveys that were initiated to
several nations, the Philippines compared to other
nations, the percentage of responses indicating a
willingness to be "vaccinated" if accessible is
substantially lower. Similar findings have been found,
where the Philippines has the highest level of vaccine
hesitancy when compared to its neighboring country in
the Global COVID-19 Trends and Impact Survey.

Based on the research regarding on the understanding

of the coronavirus vaccination, the survey's median
score was 20/22. Overall, the study participants were
well-informed about the coronavirus vaccination and
were willing to receive it, which is a testament to the
extremely laudable efforts being made to combat the
coronavirus. (Abdelrahim M., Elgendy MO., 2021)

PROBLEM
The purpose of the study is to assess the knowledge of
unvaccinated students at Southwestern University
PHINMA A.Y. 2022-2023 regarding COVID-19 vaccines and
its relationship to vaccine hesitancy. The data that to be
collected for this study will be beneficial in evaluating
the vaccine knowledge of the unvaccinated student
population and for future research references.

SPECIFIC PROBLEMS
THE COVID-19 VACCINE’S KNOWLEDGE OF
UNVACCINATED STUDENTS AT
SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY PHINMA
TOWARDS VACCINE HESITANCY

1. What sources of information about COVID-19

vaccines does the respondent have?
2. Does the unvaccinated students’ knowledge of
COVID-19 vaccine and vaccine hesitancy correlate?
3. Is there any medical condition(s) that prevent the
student from being vaccinated?
4. Are there any family members who are also
unvaccinated?
5. What course of action can be proposed base on the
10
study’s findings?

SCOPE
This study only sought out their insights and knowledge
about the information and efficacy of the vaccines, and
whether it correlates to the reason that led them to vaccine
hesitancy. The number of respondents who will participate in
the study will be determined using Slovin's formula. First-year
college students who are unvaccinated will participate in this
study regardless of their department.

RESEARCH RESPONDENTS
The researchers will use stratified random sampling from
the overall population of unvaccinated first-year college
students at Southwestern University PHINMA, regardless
to the course and department.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
The main tool that will be use in gathering the data for this
study is the researcher-made survey questionnaire through
Google Form, with the use of 5-point Likert scale in which the
respondents will scale only 1-5, wherein 1 is the lowest and 5
15
is the highest.

DATA GATHERING
In the process of collecting the data for the study, the researcher will
send a letter to the school to conduct a survey with the students, The
researchers will approach politely the target respondents through
emails and chat asked permission for a quick survey regarding the
research study. Upon the respondent’s approval, the respondents
proceeded to answer the questions given by the researchers online.
After the respondents answered all the questions, the researchers then
gathered and all the date needed and will be tally to get the results and
interpret the data. However, if the respondent failed to respond online,
16
a printed surveys will be given personally to the respondent.
