GOALS AND PROBLEMS IN TEACHING SPEAKING

1. What are some factors that prevent, or discourage, students from talking in English
in the lesson?
- Teacher’s motivation, student’s motivation, classroom environment, and the use
of Mother Tongue are some of the factors that prevent students to use the
English language in the lesson. Teachers are the ones who need to be motivated
first as they have an affect in the student’s motivation. They need to provide
activities that can activate the learners to engage in using the English language
and motivate them to do their best. If the teacher is motivated in teaching and in
speaking, the students will be motivated too and if the teacher is not motivated,
the students will not be motivated also. In the same way, classroom environment
also affects the student’s motivation. They will be easily encouraged to speak
using the English language when the environment is welcoming and comfortable
but if it is not, the students will remain silent. With the fear of making mistake
using the English language, the students still use their Mother Tongue or L1 in
speaking even in English class.

2. Why is it a good idea to use group or pair work for oral fluency activities?
- Using group work or pair work is a good idea for oral fluency activities as it allows
the learners to communicate with their classmates. This will help them use the
English language less conscious because they know at the back of their minds
that they are on the same level. It will be more comfortable for them to speak in a
small group of people rather than speaking in front of the whole class.

3. Can you remember at least two practical tips that can help students participate in a
speaking activity? Give examples and discuss why do you think this tip will help our
learner to speak.
- One of the practical tips that can help students participate in a speaking activity is
to work by pair. With this, they will be able to communicate with one person only
which makes them comfortable since it is their classmate. Those who are afraid
to speak in front of the class or even in small group will have a chance to express
his/her ideas to one person only. Another practical tip is feedback. As they work
in small groups, it is a good idea to give them time to share what they have
discussed in their group while the teacher and other groups are listening. With
this, you are giving them opportunity to speak more as they speak inside the
group and now, they will speak in front of the whole class.
