1. Purpose and Scope
Innowater BV (Boxtel, The Netherlands) asked the section Wastewater Technology of the Tech-
nische Universität Darmstadt for an expert’s opinion on the aeration system, based on oxygen trans-
fer tests in clean water. The measurements have been carried out in the glass aeration test tank at
the TU Darmstadt. In this context, Innowater BV has requested a test program comprising 10 tests
to determine the standard oxygen transfer rate (SOTR, kg/h)) and the specific standard oxygen
transfer efficiency (SSOTE, %/m) of the diffusers. The commission is based on the offer dated Au-
gust 26, 2008.
The test program contains two diffuser densities with different air flow rates. The test program is
summarized in Table 1.
Test Date aerated diffusers air flow rate air flow rate air flow rate

The tests were performed in accordance with the instructions of the DWA (German Association for
Water, Wastewater and Waste). The tests were running at November, 19. and 20., 2008.

2. Description of the Test Equipment
The test tank is a fully glazed steel frame structure, which enables precise observation of the motion
of the bubbles and thus of the flow conditions. The tank dimensions - length 3.00 m, width 1.50 m
and depth 4.00 m - are chosen to represent a section of an industrial-scale tank, thus ensuring that
the results can be applied to practical conditions. Figure 1 shows the test tank.
The compressed air is produced by means of a positive displacement blower (Aerzener Machine
Factory, type GMA 10.0). An adjustable belt drive enables the air flow rate to be continuously con-
trolled.
5
2.2. Innowater - Aeration system
For the oxygen transfer test the Innowater - aeration system consists of 7 membrane tube diffusers
with a length of each 2.565 m. To select different aerated tube length each tube diffuser has an own
air connection. At a quiescent water depth of 3.80 m, this resulted in a depth of submergence of
3.70 m. Figure 2 shows the Innowater-aeration system in the test tank.
Figure 2: Innowater - aeration system in the test tank, left site: after the installation, right site: with
water depth of 0.2 m
To measure the air flow rate precisely, a calibrated rotary-piston gas meter (Aerzener G 65, type ZB
039.0) with manometer and thermometer was installed downstream of the blower. The air flow
rate at standard temperature and pressure (STP: 0°C; 1013.25 hPa) can be calculated from the
readings by adjusting for atmospheric pressure and relative humidity. A further pressure gauge was
fitted directly at the frame to enable the pressure drop in the distribution tube to be measured.
Before, during, and after the oxygen transfer measurements, the barometric air pressure, the air
temperature, the relative humidity, the water depth under quiescent and operational conditions, the
water temperature and the electrical conductivity were measured several times.
6
3. Measurements for the Determination of Oxygen Transfer Rate
With desorption measurements the oxygen transfer is determined from the decline of the previously
increased DO concentration. At the beginning of each test, the DO concentration was increased by
gassing with pure oxygen into the air flow.
The test tank was filled with Darmstadt tap water to a depth of 3.80 m. To ensure that the motor,
gearbox, and blower had reached operating temperatures, the equipment was switched on at least
two hours before the measurements were started.
The oxygen transfer was measured with three membrane probes made by the Orbisphere Company
(Hach Ultra, Geneva). The locations of the measuring points were such that any local differences of
in the oxygen concentration would be detected. The probes were mounted at different heights (1 m,
2 m, and 3 m above the tank bottom) in the tank.
Before taking each measurement, the three oxygen probes were examined and calibrated on the
basis of the oxygen saturation table of DIN 38 408 part 22. The oxygen concentrations were con-
tinuously measured and digitally recorded. The data was transmitted to a computer and analysed.
3.2. Analysis
A number of mathematical methods are known for determining the apparent volumetric mass trans-
fer coefficient (kLaT) from test data. The method of non-linear regression is applied here because it
is regarded as the most accurate method currently available.
Taking test conditions such as temperature, air pressure, tank volume, air flow rate (at STP) etc.
into account, it is possible to determine the standard oxygen transfer rate (SOTR) and the specific
standard oxygen transfer efficiency (SSOTE).
The detailed results are shown in the data report in tables A-1 to A-10 (annex), while the mean val-
ues are listed in the following tables. To calculate the specific standard oxygen transfer efficiency
(SSOTE) from a water depth of 3.8 m to higher water depths (5 m, 6 m, 7 m, 8 m) the calculation
program “O2-Tiefe” from Prof. Pöpel was used.

4. Results of Oxygen Transfer Test
In the following tables and figures the results of the oxygen transfer tests are shown. In Table 2 the
measured (kLaT-value) and the calculated (kLa20-value) aeration coefficient are listed.

flow rates. About the linear regression it is possible to calculate the kLaT-value at the set air flow
rate. The coefficient of correlation shows the quality of the tests.

5. Summary
Innowater BV (Boxtel, The Netherlands) instructed the chair of Wastewater Technology of the
Technische Universität Darmstadt to get an expert’s opinion for their fine bubble aeration system.
Therefore 10 oxygen transfer tests in clean water have been carried out in the glass aeration test
tank at the Technische Universität Darmstadt.
In accordance with the instructions of the DWA (German Association for Water, Wastewater and
Waste, DWA-leaflet M209) the tests were performed. The tests have been carried out with two dif-
ferent diffuser densities and different air flow rates. The tests have been conducted at a water depth
of 3.8 m. With the calculation program “O2-Tiefe from Prof. Pöpel the specific standard oxygen
transfer efficiency (SSOTE) has been estimated for water depth of 5 m, 6 m, 7 m, and 8 m. The re-
sults of the evaluation of oxygen transfer tests are given in this certificate.
The oxygen transfer tests with the fine bubble aeration system in the glass test tank at the Tech-
nische Universität Darmstadt shows, that this aeration system achieves SSOTE-values between
6.5 %/m and 8.8 %/m, depending on the diffuser density, the air flow rate and the water depth.
