Directions: Are these pictures familiar to you? describe each one of them in your own words
below.

First art
-It shows a terrified creature whose forms are repeated in the swirling lines
of the blood-red sky, at once seeming like a corpse and resembling a sperm
of fetus.

Second art
-I would describe it as a moving artwork, through the strokes of the brush
and
that are visible on the paint, I feel like i am brought to a world where i can
be
free, with a view of a sky raging with vibrant color.

Third art
-This artwork, reminds me of the calmness that i lose of whenever I am in
another
Slump in life . Through the hardships of life, a person tends to get
overwhelmed
and forget that it is alright, to stop. Pause for a while and give yourself time
to
calm down.
II. Processing Questions
Directions: Answer the follow-up question honestly with your own opinion.

• By looking at the painting, what interpretation can you give regarding 20 th-century art and
music? Do they have any resemblance on any other art forms and media that you know?

-Classical music from the 20th century is art music that was formally
created between 1901 to 2000, inclusive. The 20th century saw the greatest ever
divergence in musical style. As a result, there was no dominating style during this
century. The musical bounds of the 19th-century genres that were a part of the
older common practice period were not applicable to modernism, impressionism, or
post-romanticism, but they can still be included because they evolved beyond them.
After 1900, neoclassicism and expressionism were popular. Although some place
post-modernism as far back as ca., minimalism began considerably later in the
century and can be understood as a transition from the modern to post-modern era.
1930. Concept music, electronic music, musique concrète, aleatory, atonality, and
serialism were all.

ACTIVITY 2 “FILM VIEWING”

Directions: Watch the 20th century musical play West Side Story written by Leonard
Bernstein. After watching, write a reaction paper explaining the following elements of the
performance:

• Setting
• Musical Composition
• Role of composer and lyricist
• Role of Performers (Actors & Actresses)
• Role of the Audience (Students)
• Sound and musical direction
• Script / screenplay
• Props, costumes, lightning

SETTING : West Side Story takes place on the west side of Manhattan,
New York City. Most of the scenes take place in the streets, playground, on the
roof, at Doc's or under the highway.

MUSICAL COMPOSITION : Leonard Bernstein

ROLE OF COMPOSER AND LYRICIST : demonstrated the

sounds of the various orchestral instruments and explained basic music
principles to young audiences. As an audience I must be appreciative.

ROLE OF PERFORMERS (actors , actresses) :

Performers entertain others through various arts, such as music, dance, stage
entertainment, and theater. They are artists who express their talents through
recordings or in front of live audiences.

ROLE OF AUDIENCE (yourself) : The audience drives every

aspect of developing a theatrical performance. Initially, the audience serves the
role of driving the content of the play or performance itself. The audience
serves the role of driving other decisions as well. For example, producers will
consider their audience during casting.

SOUND AND MUSICAL DIRECTION : Sound is by Leonard

Bernstein & Musical Direction is by Ernest Lehman

SCRIPT / SCREENPLAY : Script by Stephen Sondheim

& Screenplay by Ernest Leham

PROPS , COSTUME , LIGHTING : The Jets' costumes are more

muted and metropolitan, with blues, greens, and purples. The men wear blue
jeans and white sneakers, along with sport coats and khakis. The women are
always in pastel dresses that reflect the 1950s style. The contrast between the
costumes, and between the gangs, is stark when the cast members are together
onstage. Lighting Designer Guy Hoare.
THINK A HEAD!

Guide Questions:
Directions: Answer the following questions honestly with your own opinion.

• How do you think would it be like to walk in the shoes of Debussy, Ravel or
Schoenberg? Would it be a very demanding life?

-We are speaking of geniuses. I think at this point it would be demanding

as the majority of general listening public unfortunately has the attention span of
about 3 minutes.

• If you were given a chance to travel and visit the birthplace of a well-known 20 th
century composer we studied, where and who would it be? Why did you choose this
particular composer?

-If I had the chance, I would go to a famous musician from the 20th
century whose birthplace I have researched. I would travel to the birthplace
of Edward Elgar, Broadheath, in the United Kingdom. Additionally, I'd love
to go to Lower Broadheath, Worcestershire, England, where there is a
museum honoring the English musician Edward Elgar. Because it is claimed
that the museum reopened on September 1, 2017, with National Trust
leadership.

• What specific 20th-century composition do you think would be a suitable piece of

performance for students in your school to appreciate and relate to? Why? Explain
your answer.

The Rite of Spring - From this generation to the first and the last,
students are expected to do atleast average if not, really good with
academics. Some students even experience family issues that they tend
to not talk about which burdens them more that one would think. At the
end of the day, students will survive and have god to thank in the end.
• As a young Filipino millennial, how would you convince your fellow Filipino students
who are used to the pop music culture, to appreciate 20 th and 21st century music
styles such as impressionistic music, expressionistic music, chance music and
electronic music of the masters? How would you go about it?

-As a student, personally, I do enjoy a lot listening to old songs,

instrumental and pop music. But this generation nowadays caters to
different kinds of genres, some engage in rock, rap music, especially if it
is being accompanied by drums, electric guitar, bass etc. Although we can
not force the other generation like me\others who likes old songs to go
into old music, then we can encourage them to listen to it, because most
of these old songs and music are really refreshing to our ears and useful
tool for relaxation, meditation and serenity because it is solemn. With
this encouragement perhaps we can convince them to love and appreciate
the music both old songs and the recent ones.

SEE IF YOU CAN DO THIS!
