Act 772, with section 29 of the penal code (animal welfare 2015), has officially
banned cockfighting activities "Si Jantan" by Asyraf Hidayat produced in 2022 is very related
to the tradition of cockfighting because, the art concept presented by him is Autobiography,
which is Autobiographical art is an artwork of art in relation to the artist's life and personality.
The artist narrated his experience on a canvas measuring 84.1 cm x 118.8 cm through mixed
media techniques such as ball pen, acrylic, and Chinese ink. This work is more interesting and
different from the others because the Jawi writing presented in this work of art is a symbol of
the words of our Malays, the cockfighting game is a unique and interesting phenomenon, it has
become a tradition of our Malays when one of their favorite games used to be cockfighting.
But unfortunately, this game is misused to get involved in cases of animal cruelty and

gambling. The use of hot colors such as red and yellow symbolizes the situation of the artist
and a symbol of courage “Si Jantan" facing a cockfight.

interestingly, in this artwork, the artist wants to convey his experience and advice in the
game of cockfighting, which is one of the Malay game traditions. maybe some of us are not
experienced in this cockfighting game, but according to the artist, this game is not just a game
that involves gambling, it is a lot of lessons that we can absorb as positive and negative things,
even though this game is legally wrong, however, for the artist the experience of watching this
cockfight makes him feel excited because this game can strengthen friendships and can create
social interaction between members of the community, not only that, the artist also wants to
bring back the knowledge of the once famous cockfighting game that has now become a history
of our Malays in earning a living even though it is a wrong way. In his advice, playing this
game is not wrong, but be careful because the game will bring harm to yourself and others.
seeing his artwork is also enough to feel the excitement and enthusiasm in this cockfighting
game situation. the selection of subjects and colors play a role in the expression of his
experience to the audience.

“Si Jantan” by Asyraf Hidayat produced in 2022, is related to the tradition of cockfighting.
The cockfighting is an ancient practice in which two or more specially bred birds fight for the
primary purpose of gambling and entertainment, however this game is a unique and interesting

phenomenon that has become a favorite pastime of Malays. Unfortunately, this game is banned
by the government in "act 772 with section 29 of the penal code (animal welfare 2015)" since
the event has been related with the cases to other criminal activities such as illegal gambling,
drug trafficking, and secret society activities.

Interestingly, in this artwork, the artist wants to convey his experience and advice in the
games of cockfighting. According to the artist, this game is not just a game that involves
gambling but there are much lessons of positive and negative, even though this game is
prohibited. This cockfighting events often attracts many people engaging in a range of criminal
activity which creates a dangerous situation for law enforcement officers, residents of the
community and all involved. However, the artist’s experience in watching the cockfight events
excites him as the game can strengthen friendships and create social interaction between
members of the community. The advice of the artist is represented through the jawi which is
interpretated as a poem that gives advice “Ayam sabung jangan dipaut, Jika dipaut kalah
laganya, Asam digunung garam dilaut dalam belanga bertemu jua”.

The art concept presented by Asyraf Hidayat is autobiographical art in relation to the
artist’s life and personality. The artist expresses his experience on a canvas measuring 84.1cm
x 118.8 cm through the process of mixed media techniques which cross-hatching with a ball
pen. Through this artwork, the artist wanted to bring back the memories of the once famous
cockfighting game that has now become a history of our Malays favorite pastime games, and
the choice of subjects and the red color chosen as an expression of the artist to the audience, as
if giving a warning intonation about this dangerous game of cockfighting,

1.5 Art Appreciation (Si Jantan, 2022 By Asyraf Hidayat)

“SI JANTAN”

Asyraf Hidayat is a young artist who started to involved in the world of fine art, he is a
fine art student at UiTM Shah Alam majoring in printmaking. “Si Jantan” 84.1 cm x 118.8 cm,
2022, mix media on canvas is an art painting with the concept of (Autobiography). The idea of
this art concept comes from his own experience in the cockfighting game. Besides that, even
though he has interesting experience about this game, what is interesting about this painting is
that the words produced are written in Jawi. In my opinion, this painter tried to dignify this
Jawi script because this script was the first script used in the Malay land.

Not only that, in this painting, there are sketches of two traditional Malay houses that are
behind the other subjects. What is more interesting to me, this painter tries to convey about the
Malay house and it recalls the uniqueness of the Malay house. This artist uses the cross-
hatching technique, with ball pen media on the subject of a house. but in my opinion, this
painter failed to create a stable view of the house, it looks a bit tilted and unstable.

Other than that, what I see there are some subjects people are playing the game
cockfighting, it has a story very close to the painter, it also talks about his experience in the
game which is quite extreme for him. but in my view, this artist has produced a work of art that
is a firm warning about the dangers of this game if it is not curbed at the same time, this artist
also wants to recall the games of the past which are now banned by the law of the country. In

my opinion, the painter uses red and yellow as strong colors, as a reminder and warning to the
audience about the risks of this game. the chicken subject also plays an important role because
this subject is the main title of this game, in my view, this chicken subject is used to convey
that, as human beings who have compassion for animals, we should protect rather than hurt
them.

“Bisa” by Amierul Romiza was produced in 2022 and exhibited in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
This artwork represents a symbol of a warrior's bravery. Hikayat Hang Tuah is a Malay epic
that contains values and high literature. This story portrays has a lot of values in terms of social
aspects, humanity, and culture. Hang Tuah is a warrior who is famous because of his courage.
Therefore, this story is a legend story that become a phenomenon now that shows the
symbolism of courage in Malay. Interestingly, in this artwork, the artist wants to reveal his
interest in Malay history and his pride in the majesty of the Malay nation, this causes artists to
be motivated to preserve it as a Malay national heritage in storytelling through artwork.

According to the artist, the 'Keris Taming Sari' was chosen to symbolize Hang Tuah
which became his sacred “keris” as he got it from a war with a Majapahit warrior named
Taming Sari. Additionally, the title of "Bisa" was chosen because the dagger of Taming Sari
is powerful and poisonous which made Hang Tuah a hero and he was able to defeat Taming
sari. Besides that, the image of the Malacca Malay Sultanate Palace as a background
symbolizes the architecture of the great Malay people. The art concept presented by

Muhammad Amierul is Malay heritage art in relation to the History of Malay. The artist
conveys the story of Hang Tuah on a canvas measuring 100 x 80cm through the technique of
impasto and glazing using brushes and palette knives. Besides that, the artwork is presented in
a realistic style. The colors used are warm colors that show the burning Malay spirit. Through
this artwork, the artist determines to bring back the legend of history with hope that his glorious
history will be increasingly recognized throughout the world.

2.4 Art Appreciation (Bisa, 2022 By Amierul Romiza)

Amierul Romiza is a young artist who started to involved in the world of fine art, since
as from as hobbies and now he is a fine art student at UiTM Shah Alam majoring in painting.
“Bisa” 100 x 80cm, acrylic on canvas is an art painting with the concept of (Malay Heritage).
The idea of this art concept comes from his interest in Malay Culture. This artwork was
produced in Jakarta Indonesiain 2022 when he runs an intern at there. As I can see, this artist
also involves in competition in the concept of Malay art. Besides that, he is an artist who still
wants to preserve the Malay nation through painting. The spirit of this artist also has proven
that there are still young souls who want to defend the goals of the Malay people

Not only that, in this painting, there are sketches of beautiful traditional Malay houses that
are behind the “Keris” What is more interesting to me, this painter tries to convey about the
Malay house and it recalls the uniqueness of the Malay house. There are symbolic of Malay
houses and Malay culture which makes me more excited about this artwork, the artist
successfully conveys the story behind the "Taming Sari" dagger which was chosen as the story

of a "Hang Tuah" who may now have forgotten about this story. Other than that, the
presentation of bright colors, namely yellow and red, is a sign of the courage of the Malays, as
the Malays are known for their fearless nature, the color red also symbolizes the Malays
bravery, wisdom, and ability. while the use of the color yellow also symbolizes the unity of the
Malay people and the fighting spirit. That has proven to me, the artist has a soul with malay
culture and heritage.

“Origin Kampung Siput”

“Origin Kampung Siput” by Azim Rodi was produced in 2022 and is related to the artist's
experience in immortalizing his paintings through visual language. “Origin Kampung Siput”
is a continuation of the works from the Checkpoint exhibition, Two Men Show by Azim Rodi

& Izhar Yusrin. However, all his works in the exhibition have the same image of being in a
box. For him, the painted boxes are a narrative of where he was born and grew up in the
environment of his father's grocery store. All the activities he did with his siblings also
happened in his father's workplace. Besides that, the box is more synonymous to be used as a
symbol for his growth journey. Interestingly, the artist wants to share his experience in a
childhood fairy tale in this artwork.

According to the artist, this painting was inspired by his grandmother's fairy tale about
the origin of the name of the village they live in, which is 'Kampung Siput'. This artwork shows
a giant snail monster walking in a river inside a box of instant noodle products. The giant's
expression was terrified and his body was slimy. According to her grandmother, there used to
be a giant "Siput" (snail) that walked the length of the village and the path it took became a
river that they used for daily use. Therefore, the artist's purpose in creating this artwork is to
recall the story that he himself believed in when he was a child. The art concept presented by
Azim Rodi is autobiographical art in relation to the artist’s experience. The artist expresses his
experience story on an 80cm x 60cm canvas through technique glazing using Acrylic.Besides
that, the artwork is presented in a surrealist style. Interestingly, the use of red in the background
creates a sense of horror and fear in the audience. This artist also uses more geometric canvas
to be different from the others.

3.3 Art Appreciation (Origin Kampung Siput, 2022 By Azim Rodi)

Azim Rodi is a young artist who involves in the world of Fine art, since 2017. He from
diploma in fine art from UiTM Seri Iskandar, Perak and now he got working as an assistant
gallery at UiTM. After a year of working as a gallery assistant, at the young age of 23 years
Azim Rodi has many collaborations with other artists, he is also very active in producing works
that tell fairy tales and most of his artworks have a surrealist concept. Interestingly, this artwork
inspiring by a fairy tale story that he got from his grandmother.

Besides that, in this painting, there are sketches of bigger snails that are in the box. What
is more interesting to me, this painter tries to recall his memories of childhood with his
grandmothers and also siblings. In my opinion, this artist was successful to bring back the
concept of surrealism which is combined real things and his fairy tales. The presentation of
warm colors, namely dark red and brown is a sign of the mysterious fairy tale that makes the
audience wonder and fear. In my view, this artist was successful, this artist managed to draw a
balanced painting composition, for example, the position of the box gives a 3D impact and the
position of the snail gives an interesting composition. The use of frightening colors also has an
impact on the viewing audience.

 4.0 CONCLUSION

Overall, in my conclusion, I was able to comprehend the artist's intentions and style of
presentation better because of the process of producing some of these writings. Each piece of
artwork has its own story; some are inspired by personal experience, while others are created
out of strong interest. This has a varied effect on my writing. In addition to that, I may improve
my knowledge of writing about art by seeing and comprehending more specifics about an
artwork. Additionally, when I write, I research the steps an artist takes to create an artwork.
What is even more interesting, I am a person who is quite difficult to communicate with
outsiders. The results of this assignment also helped me a lot to get to know more young artists
who are skilled in producing great artwork. I don't think there are actually many talented artists
but their artwork is not highlighted with writing.

As a result of the task given, I am very excited to help my friend raise the attention of his
artwork in public. some of the audience may not understand the meaning, so I am very excited
when many young artists also help in the production of my writing. so, in my opinion, this
writing can not only help you in developing knowledge, but this writing can also help others in
earning a living and also raise the name of a young artist.
