BIOCHEMISTRY LABORATORY REPORT

Urinalysis report

Introduction
In the human body urine is excreted via the kidney. Metabolism in the body produces wastes which are
excreted in urine. Some of these wastes include urea, uric acid and water. Tests might be performed on
urine to predict presence of a disease in the body depending on the biochemical parameter being tested.
Tests performed on urine are known as urinalysis.

Aim of the experiment

The experiment aimed at measuring the following parameters:
● Glucose
● Protein levels
● Keton levels
● Bilirubin levels
● Nitrite levels
● Blood
● pH
● Specific gravity
● Leucocytes
● Urobilinogen

Equipment
● Collecting jar
● Urine sample
● Gloves
● Dip stick

Procedure
1. Label the container with your name.
2. Collect urine in a sterile container.
3. Immediately examine and record the following physical features;
● Appearance
● Color
● Volume
● Blood presence

4. Using the pH Strip, test and record the parameters mentioned in the Aim of the
experiment section.

Findings
After the test on 25ml of urine I recorded the following results;
1. Glucose - Negative
2. Protein levels - Negative
3. Keton levels - Negative
4. Bilirubin levels - Negative
5. Nitrite levels - Negative
6. Blood - Negative
7. pH - 7.0
8. Specific gravity - 1.010
9. Leucocytes - Negative
10. Urobilinogen - Normal

The urine was light yellow in color.

Conclusion
The individual whose sample was tested was not suffering from any disease related to the measured
parameters.

Glucose Test
Introduction
Glucose is an important chemical substance in the body as it is the main source of energy for all
processes of metabolism in the body. Glucose level in the blood should be kept at a normal level.
An increase or decrease in blood glucose level indicates a problem in the body.

Aim of the experiment

Measure blood sugar level

Equipment
Glucose meter
Glucose test strips
Log book
Lancet
Alcohol Swab

Procedure
1. Clean your fingertip using the alcohol swab.
2. Prepare the lancing device.
3. Take one test strip out of the test strip vial and replace the vial cap immediately and close
it tightly.
4. Insert it into the test strip slot of the meter.
5. The meter turns on automatically, and the code number appears on the screen.
6. Make sure the code number matches the number on the strip vial.
7. When the blue blood symbol flashed on the meter, start the testing. (Apply the blood
sample within three minutes)
8. Place the lancing device against the fingertip and press the trigger. Gently squeeze the
fingertip until you get a drop of blood.
9. Bring the meter with the test strip to touch the blood drop to the edge of the application
point of the test strip. The blood will be drawn into the test strip automatically.
10. You will hear a beep letting you know the test has begun.
11. After countdown, the test results are displayed with date and time and stored in the
meter’s memory automatically. (The test can be displayed either in mg/dl or mmol/l).

Findings
Blood glucose level was 5.0mmol/l

Conclusion
I had normal blood sugar level.
