DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 9

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate understanding of the relationship between the projectile
motion, impulse and momentum, and conservation of linear momentum.
B. Performance Standards The learners should be able to discuss propose ways to enhance sports related to
projectile motion.
C. Learning Competencies The learners should be able to investigate the relationship between the angle of release
and the height and range of the projectile. S9FE-Iva-35
D. Objective At the end of a 50-minute discussion, the learners should be able to:
 Investigate the relationship between the angle of projection to the range
and height of a projectile;
 Solve problems for projectiles launched horizontally and at various
angles to the horizontal; and
 Use examples derived from sports to show that the angle of release
affects the range and height of a projectile.

A. Reviewing
previous lesson ELICIT In your previous lesson, you have learned
(5 minutes) that projectile is an object that is initially
thrown into the air and continues to move
on its trajectory acted upon by gravity. Yes Ma’am!

What is projectile motion? Projectile motion is

the motion of an
object thrown
(projected) into the
air when, after the
initial force that
launches the object,
air resistance is
negligible and the
only other force that
object experiences
is the force of
gravity. The object
is called a
projectile, and its
path is called its
trajectory.

incorrect.

_____1. A projectile motion has a constant

velocity in the horizontal direction.
_____2. The velocity at the maximum
height of a projectile motion is not equal to
zero.
_____3. The path of the projectile motion is
called a trajectory.
_____4. A force acting on a projectile is
gravity.
_____5. The gravity at the maximum height
of a projectile motion is zero.

In this module we will focus on investigating

the relationship between the angle of
release and the height and range of the
projectile.

practicing new (5 minutes) discussion let’s have a pretest first.
skills
Choose the letter of the best answer. Write Students will follow
the chosen letter on a separate sheet of
paper.

1. In the absence of air resistance,

the ball was thrown at an angle.
Which of the following angle does
the ball go farthest?

a. 35.0 degree
b. 45.0 degree
c. 65.0 degree
d. 90.0 degree

2. A basketball player has thrown the

ball at an angle of 30.0 degree and

b. 50.0 degree
c. 60.0 degree
d. 70.0 degree

3. A baseball player hits the ball at an

angle of 15.0 degree from the
horizontal with a velocity of 20.0
m/s. How far will the ball travel in
the air?

a. 10.24 m
b. 20.48 m
c. 21.0 m
d. 21.5 m

4. A football is kicked with an initial

velocity of 30 m/s at an angle of 45
degree with the horizontal.
Determine the maximum height of
the football.

a. 22.00 m
b. 22.93 m
c. 35.22 m
d. 36.00 m

Projectile motion can apply to sports like

basketball, volleyball and football. These
sports involve throwing and kicking a ball.
And they are all making a curved path in
mid-air. This curved path made by the ball
is called a projectile, a motion with two-
dimensions; the horizontal (range or
distance) and vertical (height) components.

Projectile-Motion.png

The angle of release affects the range and

height of a projectile. The maximum range
is achieved if the projectile is fired at an
angle of 45 degree with respect to the
horizontal as shown in the figure above. An
object launched at an angle of 30 degree
will also be the same if it is launched at 60
degree. The angles 30 degree and 60
degree are called complementary angles
because they add up to 90 degree.

As the angle of launch increases, the

vertical displacement of the projectile will
also increase. At the highest point, the
vertical component of velocity is zero and
the time to reach the maximum height is
half of the total time of flight.

SAMPLE PROBLEMS:

1. A baseball player leads off the

game and hits along home run. The
ball leaves the bat an angle of 25
degree with a velocity of 30 m/s.
a. What is the maximum height
reached by the ball?
b. What is the horizontal displacement
(range) of the ball?
