Assignment 3: Complex Engineering Problems Power Electronics

Questions
1. A three-level five-switching angle SHE PWM waveform, which is shown in Figure 1, is
to be controlled using STM.

Figure 1: Question 1 – SHE PWM with 5 notches per Quarter Cycle

Use Newton-Raphson method to solve the SHE PWM switching angles. In this exam-
ple, a single-phase system is assumed, and modulation index of output voltage, M, is
0.85.

(a) Derive a Fourier Series Expression for the give output voltage waveform.
(b) Write an m-file to determine the angle of notches such that 3rd, 5th, 7th and 11th
harmonic is eliminated and modulation index is 0.85.
(c) Implement the inverter in Matlab Simulink. Show output voltage waveform and
all the gate signals.
(d) Show the current waveform for RL-load, R = 1 Ω and L = 10 mH.
(e) Determine the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the load voltage and current
waveform.
(f) Determine the spectrum of the inverter output voltage waveform.

2. Consider a space-vector having magnitude of 1 at an angle of 90 degree from the

reference (α or d-axis), sampled at the frequency of 10 kHz. Determine the duty cycle
of the adjacent vectors of the sector and duty cycle of the high side switches when
modulation index is 0.7 and PWM pulses are right aligned. Sketch the optimised
pattern considering the centre aligned PWM generation.
