    There are two main mechanisms that can cause bioeffects from exposure to ultrasound: thermal and mechanical. Thermal effects occur when temperatures rise too high and cause metabolic breakdown and cell damage through absorption of sound into heat. Mechanical effects do not involve heat and can damage tissues through interaction with ultrasound waves. Mechanical effects include inertial cavitation, where microbubbles implode and may lead to smaller bubbles, stable cavitation causing fluid flow and cell wall stresses, and radiation force producing shear stresses.
