LAWS OF MOTION: WORKSHEET

1. Forces of 5√2 N and 6√2 N are acting on a body of mass 1000 kg at an angle
of 600 to each other. Find the distance covered, acceleration and velocity of
the mass after 10s.
(Ans: 0.01349 m/s2, 0.1349 m/s, 0.6745m)
2. A stone of mass 5 kg falls from top of a cliff 50m high, and buries 1m in
sand. Find the average resistance offered by the sand and the time it takes
to penetrate. (Ans: 2450N, 0.064s)
3. A cricket ball of mass 150g moving with a velocity of 15m/s is brought to
rest by a player in 0.05s. Calculate the impulse and average force exerted by
the player. (Ans: -2.25Ns, -45N)
4. A bomb at rest explodes into three fragments of equal masses. Two
fragments fly off at right angles to each other with velocities 9 m/s and 12
m/s respectively. Calculate the speed of the third fragment. (Ans: 15m/s)
5. A ball of mass 1 kg hangs in equilibrium
from two strings OA and OB as shown in
the figure. What are the tensions in the
string OA and OB? Take g=10m/s2.
(Ans: T1=5N, T2=5√2 N)

6. Two blocks of masses m1 and

m2 in contact lie on a horizontal
smooth surface as shown in
figure. The blocks are pushed
by a force F. If the two blocks
are always in contact, what is
the force at the common
interface?

7. Two blocks of masses m1 and

m2 are connected by a massless
spring as shown. Find the value
of the tension in the string if a
force of 200N is applied on (i)
m1 and (ii) m2
(Ans: 125N, 75N)

8. A block of mass 2 kg is placed on the floor. The coefficient of static friction is

0.4. If a force of friction 2.5N is applied on the block, calculate the force of
friction between the floor and the block. (Ans: 7.84N)
9. A block of mass 10kg is sliding on a surface inclined at an angle 300 with the
horizontal. If the coefficient of friction between the block and the surface is
0.5, find the acceleration produced in the block. (Ans: 0.657 m/s2)
10. Calculate the angle through which a cyclist bends from the vertical when he
crosses a circular path of 34.3 m in circumference in √22s. Take g=9.8 m/s2.
(Ans: 450)
