According to the Oxford learners’ dictionary a greeting is “Something that you say or do to greet
somebody”. It comes from the word greet, which means “To say hello to somebody or to
welcome them”.
A farewell is “the act of saying goodbye to somebody”.
We have formal and informal greetings. Formal means “(of a style of dress, speech, writing,
behaviour, etc.) very correct and suitable for official or important occasions.” 2
Informal means “relaxed and friendly; not following strict rules of how to behave or do
something”.2
We use formal greetings when we talk to an important person or a person in higher rank (your
boss, teacher, or an elderly person).

It is important to introduce yourself because it shows your ability to meet new people with
confidence by providing your personal information, job/occupation, and personal interests. It is
very important to learn the alphabet because English is not a phonetic language, in other
words, the pronunciation does not correspond with the spelling.
That is why it is very common to hear people asking “How do you spell your name?” or
“How do you spell that word?”
A. Listen and repeat. Then practice the alphabet with the plates of the cars and learn
how to spell your full name. Track seven.
We hear very often the words job, profession, and occupation as synonyms, but in some
contexts they have a little difference in meaning. According to the dictionary, a job is the work
that someone does to earn money. An occupation is something that you spend time
doing, either for pleasure or because it needs to be done. A profession is a type of job that
requires advanced education or training.3
When somebody ask you for your job or occupation that person may say “What do you do?”
you answer this way “I am a student.” If you want to know about somebody else’s job you
should ask “What does he/she do? – She/He is a lawyer.” Examples:
1. - What do you do? 2. - What does she do? 3. - What does he do?

It is common to hear some people telling the time using the digital format. It is very important
to learn how to read the time in the analogue format because it provides a lot of information it
does not show only the current time, but also allows you to plan for how much time you have
remaining to complete a task or arrive at a destination within a stablished schedule.4 In other
words, you develop your logical thinking.
In English you tell the time starting by the minutes then by the hour. Examples:
We use past from the minute one (1) to the minute thirty (30) 00:01 - 00:30. And the count
We use to from the minute thirty-one (31) to the minute fifty-nine (59). 00:31-00:59
Note: from the minute 31 to 59 minute we say how much time is left to the next hour, in
other words, we start a countdown.
