American Gothic: Poe’s The Black Cat

A subgenre of gothic fiction is American gothic fiction. American gothic elements include
rationality versus irrationality, puritanism, guilt, the uncanny, ghost and other supernatural
creatures. Puritan imagery, particulary that of hell, served as brain candy for 19th-century
writers such as Edgar Allan Poe. The Puritan culture of condemnation, reinforced by shame
and guilt, created dark and nightmarish visions that left a mark on the collective
consciousness. Predestination and original sin theories added to the doom and gloom of
traditional Puritan values. What characterized American gothic fiction different than from
European authors?
