PHYS101 Section 8

Homework 5 Due: 29.12.2020 Tuesday 23:59

Homework procedures: See HW2 Sheet
1. The cube in the figure has mass m, side lengths d, and it is mounted on an axle
through its center. A spring with spring constant k connects the cube’s upper corner
to a rigid wall. Initially the spring is at its rest length. If the cube is rotated 3° and
released, what is the period of the resulting SHM? If cube is replaced with a triangle
of same mass m and same side length d, find the new period. Repeat with a uniform
disk, mass m, radius d.

2. A physical pendulum consists of two sticks both has length L, and they are
joined together as shown in figure. Horizontal stick has mass m1 and vertical
one has mass m2. What is the pendulum’s period of oscillation about a pin
inserted through point A at the center of the horizontal stick? Checks two
extreme cases when m1=0 and m2=0 and compare with what would be
expected.

3. A particle performs SHM along x axis. Its equilibrium point is x=0. The
oscillation frequency is f=5.00 Hz. At a certain moment of time the particles position is measured as
x0= 20.0 cm and its velocity is measured as v0 = 120 cm/s. Find the position x and velocity v of the
particle at t = 3.40 s after that moment.

4. Find frequency of small oscillations for the block-pulley-spring arrangement shown in the
figure. Masses of spring and rope are negligible and rope does not slide over pulley.
Radius and moment of inertia of pulley are given as R and I. Spring constant is k and mass
of block is m.

5. You are given a stick with length L, mass m, and asked to drill a hole in it so that when
pivoted about the hole, the frequency of the pendulum will be a maximum. Where should
you drill the hole? Plot the frequency vs hole position.

6. Two identical thin rods each with mass m and length L are joined at right angles to
form an object as shown in figure. The object is balanced on top of a sharp edge. If
the object is deflected slightly, it oscillates as expected. Find the frequency of
oscillation.
