IMPACTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE…

INTRODUCTION

Academic struggle is a case that most students have experienced frequently since then.
Studying has always been challenging; students must put in the effort and hard work to perform
their duties well. Students also need the support of others for their academic work to improve
their learning; social media is one of their primary sources to attain that goal. Social media
rapidly alters societal discourse due to its accessibility, speed, and reach. (Asur & Huberman,
2010). On the other hand, social media was made to interact and allow people to share ideas and
thoughts and gain information. It can use for positive things, like knowing how to use it correctly
and efficiently. They can always communicate with their friends or tutors through social media.
They do not need to wait to see the teacher's announcement. Social media promotes learning by
offering support and sharing more data that can be helpful. If there is a positive side, there is a
negative side to using social media. Students will always depend on social media because they
may need more time to do assignments or work. Due to misperceptions about how social media
can affect academic achievement, the student will be lazy rather than productive.

Students may let their excessive use of social media affect their academic performance
as a result of the way they use it because they learn negative behavior and other negative traits
from what they read, see, and hear. Social media is not just full of information but also fake news,
which makes people believe and be blind by it. Social media also hinders students because it
shapes their mindset and causes them to become more dependent on it. These affect their
academic performance and mental stability because it causes them to form irrational viewpoints
and delusions in which social media is their only reliable source. Moreover, students are
increasingly using social networking sites. However, students actively engage in online gaming,
entertainment, and shopping day and night. Moreover, this habit limits their learning
opportunities and causes some students to have poor school performance.

The research's main objective is to see and evaluate students' lived experiences, utilizing
social media towards academic performance. This investigation seeks to clarify the cause-and-
effect relationship between social media use and its potential impacts on academic performance
among students. Also, to understand how students perceive the effect of social media on their
academic performance.

It is essential to understand how Senior High School Students utilize social media, how it
influences their everyday activities, how they customize these platforms, and how it influences
their academic and social experiences. Last but not least, evaluate how social media can help
students improve their communication skills, access resources, and participate in other
interactions that help create an inclusive environment within the school. By better understanding
the role of social media in promoting inclusivity within the school environment and supporting
student development, educators can develop more effective strategies for utilizing this technology
to improve learning outcomes.

Researchers will prove that this study will benefit the students and the people around
gathering information and knowledge regarding the topic, students' interaction on social media,
and its effects on studying, as it is a common concern in society. This study will also benefit
society and students as we develop and give out "ideas" or "visuals," resulting in positive effects

of the applied research strategies and well-functional plans. This research will be a helpful
Contribution to future researchers as it gives different perspectives and values of every research,
providing more than enough information and details. This study also gives the vast advantage of
gaining multiple researchers using the information to form new ideas and theories that will help
future students understand and apply them to themselves. In-depth research on this topic will
provide enough knowledge for students who will be concerned about their situation regarding
how social media will affect their academic performances and how it will affect their lived
experiences as a student.
