Water shortage and its effects in the Philippines

Intrduction
Out of its population of 109 million people, 57 million people (52% of
the population) lack access to a reliable, safely managed source of
water, and 43 million people (39%) lack access to safely managed
household sanitation facilities. Water scarcity is a seasonal, annual or
multi-annual water stress condition. It occurs when water demand
frequently exceeds the sustainable supply capacity of the natural
system in river basins. It can be measured as the ratio between
renewable freshwater resources and water abstraction or water use.

When water is scarce, people are often forced to rely on drinking

water sources that may not be safe. They may also lack sufficient
water for basic hygiene - to wash themselves and their clothes, and to
prevent infection including from foodborne and waterborne diseases.

Water shortage is the result of rapid population growth and poor

governance that led to failure to put up the necessary water supply
infrastructure and systems to meet the growing demand for water of a
rapidly increasing population.
