MODELING INTERNAL ASSESSMENT:

STUDYING PRESSURE IN LIQUIDS VIA HOME MADE LAB

The bottle at left has two identical holes at different heights: Hole A and Hole B.

1. What do you expect to happen when you remove the tape from one of the holes?
(Describe what will happen as soon as the tape is removed, what will happen over
time, as the water level drops in the bottle. Write your hypothesis below.) [2
MARKS / A]

Let’s find out what really happens. Using a plastic bottle of 1.5 mL (or bigger), dig a hole B approximately 6 cm
above the base of the bottle and a hole A 15 cm above the base of the bottle. Paste tape on the holes and fill
the bottle with water. Then, assign to the three students in the group one of the following roles:
● Height of water recorder: this students will measure the height of the water above the holes over time,
using a measuring tape pasted vertically along the bottle
● Horizontal distance recorder: this student will measure the horizontal reach of the water being expelled
through the hole over time, using a measuring tape pasted vertically along the table.
● Note taker: this student will take notes about the measurements taken by the other two students.

As the experiment is conducted, have the Note taker fill in the table below.
2. Remove the tape from hole B and record the horizontal distance, the water level and the water height
above the hole as the time progresses. [4 MARKS / C]

3. Paste the tape on hole B again and refill the bottle with water, then, remove the tape from the hole A
and record the horizontal distance, the water level and the water height above the hole as the time
progresses. [4 MARKS / C]
