ABSTRACT

Grade 12 students of Bulaoen East National High School will be the respondents of

this study with the use of a Checklist to indicate the effects of using tablets on the academic

performance of Grade 12 students.

The checklist is easy to use and understand for survey respondents, and it gives them

options without overwhelming them, giving them the chance to learn more about how the

new normal will affect students’ academic achievement.

This study is conducted in the school year 2022-2023 in Bulaoen East National High

School population consisting of 33 students of Grade 12 level to know the effects of tablets

on nowadays students and indication of the overall, result of the research questionnaire.

This study aims to investigate the effect of the tablet on their academic performance.

The research method used was quantitative; 33 respondents are grade 12 students: 14 from

viii
HUMSS, 13 from TVL, 5 from Gas, and 2 from ABM. A descriptive survey design was used

for research, a checklist instrument was used, and data were obtained from grade 12 students.

As previously stated, the data in the guide showed its effect on the student’s academic

performance. Tablet use in the classroom has and will continue to contribute to improved

academic performance. The tablet makes it easier for students to find information quickly

and accurately. Classrooms are gaining more technology and must incorporate it into

learning. These are excellent opportunities for learning via mobile devices such as tablets,

which students all over the world are already using. Tablets are an effective means to engage

students and make lessons more interactive. Tablets can also be used to make PowerPoint

presentations, Word documents, PDFs, and so on, so this means they gave the tablet to

ensure a quality education for all Filipino students. Tablets are useful because they allow

students to download and review classroom materials at home.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter shows the introduction, background of the study, statement of the

problem, the significance of the study, scope and delimitations, definition of terms, and

conceptual framework. This chapter enlightens the reader to have a better understanding

and insights into what is this study all about.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In recent years, there has been a huge increase in the number of people with

access to mobile devices in higher education. Since tablet computers, also known as

"tablets," have become more accessible in recent years, educators can now provide

students with increased availability of these technologies. Classrooms are gaining more

technology and having to incorporate it into student learning. These are good

opportunities for learning through mobile devices such as tablets, which students around

the world are already enjoying.

The use of tablets in the classroom has and will continue to contribute to

improved academic performance. Tablet makes it easier for students to find information

quickly and accurately. Students at the school will have access to the tablets that it

supports to improve their academic performance and motivation to learn. According to

Tablet Report 2013, the program “Tablet Learning Project” the distribution of tablets to

each student would benefit educationally from having easy access to their personal

computer, and tablets which it is known as the most portable option.

1
According to Scott Winstead (2022), a German teacher, she shared some of her

tablet-related experiences with her students. According to her, students can use tablets to

create class presentations to present what they have learned throughout a unit of study to

the teacher or their fellow students. Students are more motivated to complete their

homework if they can do it on their tablet, according to a study by the American

Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). It can also make homework more enjoyable as

each student has a tablet to work on during the school day. And teachers use tablets to

help students complete complex math calculations more quickly. If each student has his

or her own tablet, they'll be able to use the calculator functions when acceptable to

decrease the amount of time needed to solve a complex problem. Students don't need to

get hung up on individual calculations as they solve more complex problems, especially

younger students.

According to Rex Santus (2014), More than 1.4 million Liberian children are

currently without access to education. Tech developer Rumie is sending 200 low-cost

tablets to help kids continue their education. Students were using them to learn math,

science, and English. Math so they can calculate faster, science to find any information

they need, and English to find the word they want to find the meaning of in the

dictionary.

According to Emma (2022), tablets are an ideal tool to help students begin to see

that technology can help them learn and grow, in addition to being a source of fun and

entertainment. Therefore, using tablets in school can make education more efficient and

effective. To ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong

2
learning opportunities for all”. The mobile learning project involved the use of mobile

technology to deliver learning materials to students to provide flexibility of access.

According to the 2017 Journal of Learning and Development, which is included

here students' understanding of how to use tablets for learning. The mobile learning

project, according to parents, increased their children's interest in studying. Teachers also

noticed that students were paying more attention in class and concentrating on their

tablets while studying. And based on their study the post-test scores were significantly

higher than the pre-test scores, indicating that students' performance improved as a result

of using tablets for learning. As a result, the tablet is a great help to students who want to

review their tests or work to improve their grades.

The Ministry of Education has so far distributed 732,000 tablet computers as part

of the Movement to Increase Opportunities and Technology (FATH) Project. The FATİH

Project is focused on the equality of opportunities and effective learning in education.

In the Philippines, Legarda urges Congress to frontload the passage of an enabling

law providing computer tablets for all public-school students and learners. The senator

stressed the proposed "One Tablet, One Student Act of 2022" was crafted to give each

elementary and secondary level student in public schools a tablet. It is one way of making

quality education accessible to all, especially to those who cannot afford to buy their

gadgets. It aims to ensure the better academic performance of incoming Grade 12

students in the coming School Year 2021 to 2022.

The "K to 12 Basic Education Program" will be implemented by the Philippine

government to transform the country's educational system by switching out textbooks for

3
tablets. Teachers will receive the appropriate training they need to become comfortable

with tablet-based teaching techniques. Low-cost tablet models were introduced by Vibal

Publishing House in collaboration with Microsoft Corporation, and the company plans to

use them to run open-source educational software.

In 2020, approximately 36 million people use tablets in the Philippines, and the

user number was forecasted to grow by over 51 million by 2025. The number of tablet

users has increased significantly throughout the years. Published by Statista Research

Department, Jul 8, 2022.

Tablets can really useful to find information at any time, any place. Students are

using tablets to study their assignments, and wi-fi technology can be used in the

classroom so that students can complete their assignments. Just as all the work that needs

to be passed on to the teachers is facilitated, the module can also be downloaded on

tablets so that there is no need for a hard copy so that the students can keep up with the

lesson. Tablets can also be used to make PowerPoint presentations, Word, pdf, and so on,

so this means they gave the tablet to ensure a quality education for all Filipino students in

helping them cope with challenges that students encountered in learning. and to those

who cannot afford to buy their gadgets.

Tablets are an effective means to engage students and make lessons more

interactive. Now we want to know how often students use their Tablets to support

learning, what are the effects of using Tablets on the academic performance of grade 12

students, and what is the relationship between the effect of using tablets and the academic

performance of Grade 12 students.

4
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of using a tablet on the

academic performance of Grade 12 students. It is timely, so it is the right time to conduct

this research because you are now experiencing what is known as "technology

everywhere," and technology has advanced exponentially over the years. All technology

has the potential to change the way we live in ways that most of us are unaware of

because we have accepted it as the norm. Technology is all around us. It's difficult to

think of any aspect of our lives that doesn't involve it. And In terms of convenience, it is

indeed effective for students to use laptops and tablets for academic purposes. Due to

technological development nowadays, these gadgets have apps that help students in their

studies. Laptops and tablets can take down notes faster than notepads. Students

nowadays, instead of copying the writings on the board, use tablets to take pictures which

is convenient. Not only that, you can store data into it or upload it in the cloud to

permanently save data as a backup if ever your gadget is damaged whereas in notepads; if

it gets torn or wet, the things you write will forever disappear. However, notepads are less

expensive and it teaches you the value of diligence. Both are effective depending on the

person. A tablet gives you portability, ease of use, and the ability to easily copy or share

your works quickly and easily. You can also use your tablet to do digital painting or

creative writing related to your studies. Students nowadays rely on the Internet for

homework help, whereas in the past they relied on dictionaries, the library, atlases,

searching everywhere, and other resources. learning difficult topics will be much faster

and easier. Using tablets in the classroom can help students learn more quickly. As

researchers, we want to know what effect the tablet has on students' academic

performance and how often they use their tablets to support learning.

5
According to Mark Zadvinskis on August 30, 2022, using a digital version of the

same Technology use is increasing worldwide, and introducing students to it early in their

development will prepare them to work with technology in their future careers. Results

revealed that 78% of students who used the digital study material achieved proficiency or

advanced standing on California state exams, compared to just 59% of students who used

only the traditional textbook. From cell phones to our tablets, from school to home,

technology enhances our lives, bringing us closer to information, entertainment, and each

other. So it indicate here the effects of using tablet on students' academic performance

and how often they use their tablets to support learning.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the relevant literature and studies that the researcher

considered in strengthening the importance of the present study. It also presents the

synthesis of the art fully understand the research to a better comprehension of the study.

Many people associate using tablets of student users with academic performance. Various

studies have produced varying results over the years. Maybe tablets have positive effects

on students ’academic performance.

RELATED LITERATURE

In recent years, tablets have offered increasingly tempting opportunities to users

in industries such as education and others. due to their portability, ease of use, and other

features (El-Gayar, Moran, & Hawkes, 2011). Tablets, which are pen-enabled devices

similar to laptops, are gaining popularity. Recognized as valuable educational resources

(Weitz, Wachsmuth, & Mirliss, 2006). These devices allow for a variety of learning

activities such as reading, recording, writing, browsing, connecting, and communicating

(Mohseni, 2014). According to research, students feel much more confident when they

use tablets because they have more opportunities to collaborate (El-Gayar, Moran, &

Hawkes, 2011; Weitz, Wachsmuth, & Mirliss, 2006). Furthermore, universities are

10
discovering that tablets can be used to equal and equitable access to learning

opportunities (Ally, Balaji, Abdelbaki, & Cheng, 2012; Henderson, Selwyn, & Aston,

2017; Tambouris et al., 2012; Voss, 2013). In the long list of technological

advancements thought to support and improve the teaching and learning processes,

tablets and smart mobile devices are the most recent additions.

SUPPORT LEARNING

Tablet use, in particular, is rapidly increasing around the world, particularly in

schools and higher education, to change the educational process in a variety of settings.

According to research, tablets have the potential to increase access to education not only

in urban areas but also in rural areas. In Swat, Pakistan, for example, a mobile learning

project was carried out in two schools involving Grades 8, 9, and 10, where tablets were

used to provide students with learning resources. According to the findings of this study,

students preferred learning with tablets are useful because they allow students to

download and review classroom materials at home. Students with minor visual

impairments found tablets especially useful because they could read well using the

tablets' zoom-out function (Ally, Balaji, Abdelbaki, & Cheng, 2017).

Similar findings were reported in Chen (2013)'s action research project, which

discovered that students developed positive attitudes toward usability and accessibility.

Because of their ease of use, tablets are effective as a tool for mobile-assisted language

learning. functionalities, expandable application installation, and portability. In a

longitudinal study conducted in Belgium, Courtoiset l. (2013) found that secondary

11
students used tablets in school because they perceived them as useful and enjoyable,

rather than because their peers convinced them it was the newest technology to own.

Tablets have provided an opportunity for students to be at the forefront of

learning with their introduction to schools. Mobile technologies such as tablets provide

new modes and forms of interaction through social networking and an increased

possibility of sharing information (Zhong, 2013). Tablets, which strongly aid this kind of

interaction and information-sharing, can enhance the possibilities of learning within

specific educational Tablets can be used for many activities that support learning of

knowledge, including taking notes during the lesson (Steinweg, Williams, & Stapleton,

2010), accessing e-books (Dundar & Akcayir, 2014), using different applications (Keskin

& Kuzu, 2015), using computer-aided test instruments (Siozos, Palaigeorgiou,

Triantafyllakos, & Despotakis, 2009) and carrying out research through various websites

And Making schoolwork more fun and more interactive adds extra incentive for students

– tablets can help to increase focus and motivation. The virtual environment created by a

tablet is stimulating for students who may feel unmotivated by a traditional classroom

setting. This helps to increase the forms of learning available to the students. Several

teaching methods found in The Learning Pyramid can be efficiently provided and aided

by a tablet device.

Tablets now appear to be taking the place of laptops, which were heralded in the

1990s as the most cutting-edge invention to aid students in the learning process through

one-to-one laptop programs. Sadly, the idea that giving children access to modern

technology will solve access problems in the classroom and change the educational

environment still seems to be in vogue. Particularly in the last several years, the potential

12
of tablets has proved so lucrative and worthy that a number of nations have launched

extensive, government-led projects to provide tablets to students in the K–12 education

sector. This is explained in the document Large-Scale, Government-Supported

Educational Tablet Initiatives (Tamim,

2015), printed by the Commonwealth of Learning. Borokhovski, Pickup, and

Bernard

The Tablets for School researchers discovered that 87% of students found

learning easier due to their tablet, 72% believed their standard of work had improved and

69% expressed a significant increase in motivation. Manuguerra and Petocz (2011)

advocate tablets as a way to change the teaching and learning process in higher

education, specifically the way students interact with each other and the content. Tablets

replace print textbooks, which are heavy and can cause injuries to students. Tablets can

also hold a student's homework, quizzes, and other files. Teachers can easily download

items from one tablet to another, making the transference of files a quick, simple task.

But despite the presence of tablet technologies in education, their utility in the teaching

and learning process remains a challenge. It is therefore worthwhile to discuss some

classroom applications so that this innovation can become a more powerful tool for both

instructors and students. When Tablets for Schools approached students to ask about the

benefits of using tablets in the classroom, 100% of those asked revealed they could use

the device to do research for schoolwork. Additionally, 90% of schools included in the

research introduced tablets to the classroom ‘to support self-led research problem-

solving.

13
According to Sharishna Narayan, Som Naidu (2020) indicated that more than

80% of the students were comfortable or very comfortable with using a tablet to support

their learning Further analysis of the survey questions revealed that more than 80% of the

students were able to complete their assignments with the use of their tablets. So, it

concludes that students use tablets inside the classroom to do their assignments better.

According to Fraul Tadle, who published this on April 4, 2013, most studies have

indicated that American students prefer using tablets for their daily school activities and

assignment. Six out of ten college and high school students believe that tablets help them

study more effectively, according to a Pearson Foundation survey.

EFFECT OF TABLETS

Students at the school will have access to the tablets it supports to improve their

academic performance as well as their motivation to learn. The classroom atmosphere

also changed when tablets were introduced into the classroom. Students became more

motivated and engaged in their learning. The tablets for school researchers discovered

that 87% of students found learning easier due to their tablet, 72% believed their standard

of work had improved and 69% expressed a significant increase in motivation. General

findings of the surveys by Hinze et al. (2017) and Bowen and Pistilli (2012) indicate that:

using mobile tools to work on classroom projects improves students, academic success

students.

Mobile tablets offer educational opportunities due to their versatility and

integration of interactive media. Tablets are not only useful for visual learners; they also

affect hearing students. Literature on the use of smartphones and tablets for mobile

instruction in K–12 and higher education establishments. The mobile device uses in K–12

and higher education is currently being researched, studied, and practiced likewise

suggesting guidelines for upcoming investigations. Alzaza and Yaakub (2011)

investigated students' responsiveness and the necessity of mobile learning facilities

among Malaysian learners in the advanced education setting prepared for mobile

education execution. Tablets' use in education has expanded from the classroom to assist

students in consolidating their education. Tablets allow you to draw, interpret, and

document using a variety of ink colors on an infinite number of pages. Learners can also

keep track of and schedule their group schemes and engagements using systems like

Doodle. Tablets have emerged as the solution that provides the same benefits. advantages

of a portable smartphone with a suitable display size. According to Snell and Snell-

Siddle, enhanced mobile communication and feedback can lead to greater student

motivation.

Sharishna Narayan, Som Naidu (2020) Tablets are also widely used for finding

information related to their studies (83%) which helps increase their academic

performance. Also, all the interviewees noted that they liked carrying the device, as it

was portable. One student stated, “I like the fact that my tablet is lightweight and easy to

carry. At times, I prefer to work with my tablet rather than my laptop as it’s too heavy to

carry”. They also use a tablet to do reports and research.

According to Dr. Jose Magpantay (2013), people were asked whether they used it

for academic purposes or not. Then they were asked how they used their tablets, and they

were given the following options: note taking, reference, organizing, internet browsing,

15
PowerPoints, schedules, picture taking (notes), and reading. and the results show that

they use the tablet more to create PowerPoint for their performance tasks because those

who do not have a laptop can use the tablet to help them with schoolwork.

have a tablet. This study was conducted in Bulaoen East National High School to

determine the effects of tablets on Grade 12 students with all strands such as GAS, TVL,

HUMSS, and ABM, and Bulaoen East, Sison Pangasinan is the location of said

institution.

Research Instrument

A checklist was utilized as the research instrument. A checklist is a descriptive

research tool for determining a certain population's opinions. Checklists are a type of data

collection that involves filling out an online questionnaire. A questionnaire is a research

tool that consists of a series of questions used to collect data from respondents.

The survey questionnaire will be given to the respondents by the researchers. This

questionnaire covers the socio-demographic profile of the respondents, such as age,

gender, and strand. The first part, a checklist questionnaire is used to assimilate how

often they use their tablets in their studies. Second, the researchers used also a checklist

questionnaire to assess the extent of their experience based on the question. The checklist

questionnaire is answerable yes or no to know the effect of using tablets on their

academic performance.

18
Research Procedure

After validating the questionnaire created by the researcher, the researchers write

a letter of approval in response to the principal of Bulaoen East National High School to

seek permission to conduct the study with Grade 12 Students. After the request is

approved, the researchers will provide the Hard copy as a questionnaire to the students.

Researchers will ask respondents to answer the questionnaire honestly.

CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents an analysis and interprets the data gathered. The data were
arranged comprehensively to answer the statement of the problems using the appropriate
statistical tools. This study aimed to determine the effects of using tablets by Grade 12
students on their academic performance from the school year 2022-2023.

PROFILE OF THE STUDENTS

The profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, and strand. It is interpreted
by frequency and percentage. The respondent profile is categorized from the highest
frequency or percentage to the lowest.

19
Table 1
Profile of the Respondents
N=33
Profile Category Frequency Percentage
Age 17 17 51.52%
18 11 33.33%
19 2 6.06%
20 3 9.09%
Gender Female 20 61%
Male 13 39%
Strand HUMSS 14 42%
TVL 12 36%

GAS 5 15%

ABM 2 6%

TOTAL 33 100%

As shown in table 1, students aged 17 years old got the highest frequency of 17 or
51.52%, students aged 18 years old got a frequency of 11 or 33.33%, percent and also the
students aged 19 had a frequency of 2 or 6.06% and 20 years old got the result with the
frequency of 3 or 9.09% percent out of 33 respondents.

As shown in Table 1 in terms of Gender, the result of the survey shows that most
of our respondents are Female with a frequency of 20 or 61%. While the gender in terms
of Male respondents had 13 frequency or 39%

As shown in Table 1 in terms of Strand, 14 students in the HUMSS received the

highest frequency of 14 or 42% followed by TVL with a frequency of 12 or 36%. And
the students in GAS with a frequency of 5 or 15%. students in ABM with a frequency of
2 or 6%

20
Therefore, the majority of the respondents are HUMSS 12 females and are 17
years old. What appears in the profile is an important thing to make the evidence gathered
in the study conducted by the researchers more solid and concrete.

HOW OFTEN DO THE STUDENTS USE THEIR TABLET

Table 2 shows how often students use their tablets to support their learning. It is
interpreted by frequency and percentage.

Table 2
How Often the Students Use Their Tablets
N=33
Indicators Frequency Percentage
1. Every Discussion 18 54.55%
2. Every Activity/ Assignment 29 87.88%
3. Every Vacant 5 15.15%
4. Every Recess/Lunch 2 6.06%
5. Every Night 10 30.30%
6. Every Friday 3 9.09%

Based on the findings gathered that 18 or 54.55% of the students indicated that
they use a tablet for every discussion, while 29 or 87.88% of the students indicated that
they are using tablets for every activity/assignment. And 5 or 15.15% of them stated that
they are using tablets every vacant. Moreover, the frequency with 2 or 6.06% of students
indicated that they are using tablets every recess/lunch and 10 or 30.30% of students
indicated that they use tablets every night. With a frequency of 3 or 6.06% of students
stated that they use tablets every Friday

Therefore, based on the findings gathered that most of the student uses their tablet
for every activity/assignment to support their learning. According to Sharishna Narayan,
Som Naidu (2020) indicated that more than 80% of the students were comfortable or very
comfortable with using a tablet to support their learning Further analysis of the survey
21
questions revealed that more than 80% of the students were able to complete their
assignments with the use of their tablets. So, it concludes that students use tablets inside
the classroom to do their assignments better.

According to Fraul Tadle, who published this on April 4, 2013, most studies have
indicated that American students prefer using tablets for their daily school activities and
assignment. Six out of ten college and high school students believe that tablets help them
study more effectively, according to a Pearson Foundation survey.

According to a study by the American Association of Physics Teachers, students

are more motivated to complete their assignments and activities if they can do them on
their tablets. Since each student has a tablet to work on during the school day, it can also
make homework more enjoyable.

EFFECTS OF USING TABLETS ON THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Table 3 shows the effects of using tablets on the academic performance of the
student. It is interpreted by frequency and percentage. The researchers display a statement
with 10 questions that indicates the effects of using tablets while the second column
includes frequency information, and third column includes percentage information, and
the fourth column includes a statement with an option (Yes or No).

Table 3 shows the effects of using tablets on academic performance. Based on

findings gathered that the effect of tablets on their academic performance has increased
due to easier access to information and easier mostly answering yes which had a
frequency of 26 or 78.79%. On the other hand, they also use a tablet to make reports that
teachers make using PowerPoint, Word, or Spreadsheets with a frequency of 25 or
75.76%. It also appears that, with the help of the tablet, they can now save their lessons
offline so that they can read ahead to their lesson and no longer need to bring a book to
school with a frequency of 24 or 72.73%.

23
According to Dr. Jose Magpantay (2013), people were asked whether they used it
for academic purposes or not. Then they were asked how they used their tablets, and they
were given the following options: note taking, reference, organizing, internet browsing,
PowerPoints, schedules, picture taking (notes), and reading. and the results show that
they use the tablet more to create PowerPoint for their performance tasks because those
who do not have a laptop can use the tablet to help them with schoolwork.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter summarizes the overall findings of the analyzed quantitative data, which

underwent a series of investigations and interpretations, resulting in conclusions on the answers

to general and specific problems and recommendations based on the study's key findings.

Summary of Findings

24
Grade 12 students are the main target and respondents of this research. Based on

the findings gathered most of the grade 12 HUMSS students are 17 years old and female

that uses tablets more.

The finding shows that the effect of using tablets on their academic performance

had a positive outcome, and with the use of the fast information that students can gather,

it will be a big help for their schoolwork. They can also create PowerPoint presentations

on the tablet.

Conclusion

1. The students were able to complete their assignments with the use of their tablets.

They spend more time on the tablet to complete the activities. So, it concludes that

students use tablets inside the classroom to do their assignments better than other tasks

assigned to them by the teachers.

2. The use of tablets in education provides students to obtain more useful information, to

help increase academic performance in students and another educational system that

makes education convenient. assignments and they are using tablets to make PowerPoint

presentations, Word, pdf, and so on. Lastly, the students can also save the module to the

tablet to keep up with the lesson or discussion.

Recommendation

1. Students could continue to use tablets to do their activities for if it is a big help for

them to improve their academic performance.

25
2. Students should not just use a tablet for every activity and assignment because it is

given to us so that we can be more active in school and help their learning. Therefore, the

tablet should also be used in discussions at night, during vacant hours, and at any time

because every minute and hour is important.

3. The researchers recommend future researchers conduct the same study to offer new

findings to validate the findings in all other settings and to conduct research studies in the

same field to develop they may further help students today after day and for generations.
