The Role of Hormones in the Female and Male Reproductive Systems

Background Information for Learners

Hormones are regulating and complex chemical substances secreted by the endocrine
glands that travels to specific organs in the body through the blood stream. These are essential
in the functioning and development of the body. Particularly, the hormones of the reproductive
system play a specific role during puberty, ovulation, pregnancy, and development. After the age
of 10, both boys’ and girls’ hormone levels begin to increase and physical changes start to
develop. The hypothalamus releases chemical substances that signal the pituitary gland to start
producing two hormones responsible for reproduction -- the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
and luteinizing hormone (LH). Both males and females produce these kinds of hormones."

FUNCTIONS OF THE REPRODUCTIVE HORMONE

GLAND HORMONE FUNCTION
OVARIES Estrogen It is a category of sex hormone responsible for the
development and regulation of the female reproductive
system and secondary sex characteristics.
Progesterone It is a hormone released by the corpus luteum in the ovary.
It plays important roles in the menstrual cycle and in
maintaining the early stages of pregnancy. It may also be
involved in the growth of certain cancers.
PITUITARY Follicle - It stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles in the ovary
Stimulating before the release of an egg from one follicle at ovulation,
Hormone whereas in males it stimulates sperm production.

Prolactin It is a hormone produced by your pituitary gland which sits

at the bottom of the brain. It causes breasts to grow and
develop and causes milk to be made after a baby is born.
Luteinizing In females, It stimulates the maturation of egg cells,
Hormone progesterone production whereas in males, It stimulates
sperm and testosterone production.
TESTES Testosterone a steroid hormone that stimulates development of male
secondary sexual characteristics, produced mainly in the
testes, but also in the ovaries and adrenal cortex.

Learning Competency:
Explain the role of hormones in the female and male reproductive systems.

Direction/Instruction:
Carefully read the instruction in each activity provided. If there are questions that need to be
explained, always answer in complete sentences and be aware of your grammar. If needed, you
may use a separate sheet for some activities.
ACTIVITY 1: Is it true or false?
Read each statement below carefully. Place a T on the line if you think a statement it TRUE.
Place an F on the line if you think the statement is FALSE.
______1. The hypothalamus regulates the secretion of the male and female sex hormones.
______2. Female hormones are produced throughout the lifetime of the female.
______3. In addition to the hormone’s estrogen and progesterone, the ovary produces FSH
(follicle stimulating hormone).
______4. The corpus luteum forms from a ruptured follicle and produces LH (luteinizing
hormone).
______5. Generally speaking, testosterone is considered a male sex hormone and estrogen is
considered a female sex hormone.
______6. Falling levels of FSH trigger the onset of menstruation.
______7. Puberty in humans begins when the hypothalamus and pituitary begin releasing their
special enzymes into the bloodstream.

2
______8. The typical combination birth control pill contains estrogen and progesterone.
______9. Luteinizing Hormone and Follicle Stimulating Hormone are produced in the ovaries.
______10. Progesterone and Estradiol are produced in the ovaries.
