A FEW WORDS... FROM THE BOSS

Its been a busy few months for the organisation - new staff finding their feet, getting to know local people, recruiting and supporting volunteers, organising a number of community engagement activities for local people; including our Energize Day and holidays activities, all of which were a success with more planned for the coming months!
As the summer period comes to an end we will have delivered five days of holiday activities, which have remained as popular as ever! We have provided a range of fun activities benefiting over 85 young people, and the positive feedback received from young people and parents/ carers has been

overwhelming. Some of you may be aware we now have our very own facebook page, the Forums web site is also now live, and you can also follow us on twitter - so tweet us and keep in touch! We want to engage with as many people as possible using a range of methods, and keep you up to date with what your local Forum is up to, and how you can also get involved. Work-Shop delivered on Thursdays supports people back to work continues to go from strength to strength, and is well attended having supported 54 people to date, and two back into employment. Due to the demand we have now moved to an appointment service for one-to-one support. We continue to look for funding to provide activities and services. In May we were awarded a Kids Can Do contract which will enable us to provide a range of FREE activities for children and young people aged between 8-13 both after school and during school holidays until March 2012. A range of community learning classes and activities are being organised from September onwards for local people which will include a short course around health, Basic Literacy, Food Hygiene and others so watch out for further details.

I am pleased to be able to report we will shortly be arranging a series of estate meetings to look at issues relevant to Foxhill and for agencies to report back to the community on topics are likely to include transport, housing development, medical centre relocation. Further information will be available from Andrew and be displayed around the estate. I hope you enjoy this edition of R42 and find some thing of interest to participate in. Our next edition should be with you November early December, lets hope we dont encounter the treacherous weather conditions we did last year in Foxhill. Finally Im also pleased to welcome Rob Weir newly appointed Business Officer who replaces Charlotte Duckmanton who left us in May having been offered more hours in her other post. We wish her well for the future. Enjoy what is left of the summer! Best wishes

FRUGAL FOXHILL
In the spirit of watching the pennies and not letting anything go to waste, weve started this feature in Route 42 devoted to money saving tips and suggestions:
When making a cuppa, only use the water you need. Dont overfill the kettle. After cooking a meal, always portion the leftovers into empty containers and freeze them once cold. These make handy lunches and are healthier than readymeals. Dont throw away stale bread! Blend your loaf into breadcrumbs in a food processor and freeze to use at a later date. Plan your meals for the week ahead! Write a shopping list, and check the store cupboards to find out what you already have. Youll only buy what you need at the supermarket, and there will be less waste. Do you leave the hot tap running whilst the water heats up? Dont waste it. Collect this water in a watering can and use it on your plants! Grow your own! Save money by having a go at growing your own vegetables. You can grow vegetables in the smallest garden. If you dont have a garden, try growing new potatoes and tomatoes in pots. Sell unwanted clothes online. Sites like ebay are fantastic for this. You can also buy new clothes online for a fraction of the selling price!

HEART

of the Community
Congratulations to Mark Wilde, Foxhill Forums Chief Executive, who received a North East Community Assembly Heart of the Community Award, which are awarded to nominated individuals who have made an impact within their local communities. Mark was nominated for his hard work in these very hard times during the last year, with very limited staff. Mark has done well to manage the Forum for the last 12 months almost single handed. Mark was successful in his bid for a grant for 391,388 from the Big Lottery Fund for our 3 year Community Regeneration and Engagement Project, which will help regenerate and develop the Foxhill area. (Mark) endlessly continues to try and improve (the) Foxhill area. Well done Mark! Your work is appreciated in the Foxhill area! Councillors Tony Damms and Gill Furniss present Mark with his award.

EXCITING PLANS FOR THE HEALTHY LIVING CENTRE

In November we secured a feasibility grant through Community Builders to commission the services of an Architect and a Business Consultant to work with us around developing and expanding the services and programme the Healthy Living Centre offers. A great deal of consultation was carried out with existing users, potential users and other stakeholders in terms of what they liked, what they didnt and the improvements they would like to see carried out and included: installation of a lift and internal stair case Creation of a ground floor Healthy Eating Caf Relocate the ICT suite and refurbish with Apple Mac Technology Improved community space both floors New ground floor reception area Improved frontage to the building and improve security Three options were worked up by Nick Cole of Birkett Cole Lowe, a Sheffield based Architects practice. An open day was held on Thursday 18 March 2011 for local people to comment on the various options. The event was well attended with lots of helpful feedback and comments. The challenge for us is to find the funding to bring about the improvements, to carry out all the above we need to fundraise 390K in total which includes all the necessary professional fees. We have identified a number of funders who might support our project. We have completed an Outline Proposal form to the Big Lottery Fund, and will hear shortly if weve got through to stage two. We will also be applying to a number of other grant making trusts for financial support. We will keep you posted via R42 regarding these developments. If anyone would like to be involved in this project please contact Rob Weir on 0114 231 5522 or by email to: robert.weir@foxhill-forum.co.uk

WHAT WEVE BEEN UP TO

Big Lunch Day 05/06/11
Our Big Lunch was part of the national Big Lunch Day Project, where communities are encouraged to get together on Sunday 5th June 2011 for lunch and activities. We had activity packs for kids, a face painter, and made healthy smoothies with staff from Community Health Works. We got lots of positive feedback on our healthy lunch (try out the recipe on page 11).

Energize Day - 23/07/11

Our Energize Day was a huge success! We had childrens activities, health checks from Foxhill Medical Centre, a Tai-Chi taster session and information on local services; which included information about what is happening at Foxhill Forum. Thank you to everyone who attended.

NEW TREES FOR FOXHILL

As you walk around Foxhill what do you notice is missing? Unlike other areas of Sheffield, some parts of Foxhill are devoid of the magnificent trees which give Sheffield the title of Greenest City.
Cowper Avenue how it could look 15 years from now with the addition of 3 trees

electricity, telephone and now digital cable, have been laid in the grass verges next to the roads. Whilst this ensures easy access to the pipelines and cables, it makes lining the streets with avenues of new trees, very hard to achieve. Hence these new trees are likely to be planted in local parks, schools and other open spaces. Working with the community throughout the process, we will be careful to choose the right size, and type of tree for each location. We very much hope that local people will support this initiative to bring some greenery into the heart of Foxhill, and will benefit from the trees for many generations to come. Primary school pupils who get involved in planting these trees with us, may, one day, be able to take their own grandchildren to picnic under the trees and tell them I planted that tree when I was your age!. With care from the community the trees will be able to grow and flourish for many years ahead, alongside their owners us! If you are interested in the planting of new trees, and have any ideas, suggestions or would like to get involved in the project please contact: Leonie Kapadia, Community Forestry Project Development Officer at Sheffield City Council on 0114 2734190 or email: Leonie.Kapadia@sheffield.gov.uk

Southey Ward has the lowest tree cover in Sheffield with only 7.5% of its land planted with trees. Compare this figure to areas like Broomhill and Ecclesall where tree cover is 25% and 23% respectively, and you get some idea of the problem. Southey Ward Councillors, aware of this issue, have provided funding for a number of trees later this year. These trees will provide shade and shelter, attract wildlife, help reduce the effects of climate change, absorb pollutants and provide oxygen. They also make the environment more attractive and a healthier and prettier place to live. We are surveying the whole of Foxhill to ensure we find the areas which will benefit the most from new trees. As with other post-war housing estates in Sheffield, many of the utilities, including gas,

LOCAL FOCUS
Foxhill & Parson Cross Advice Service
Foxhill & Parson Cross Advice Service provide local people with free confidential advice on welfare benefits, debt, housing issues and general help. We saw over 2,000 people last year and brought in over 1.8 million in unclaimed benefits and debt write offs.
Established in 1986, we have increased and improved our services to try and meet the demand; our efforts were recognised when we were honoured with a visit by HRH the Duchess of Cornwall on Wednesday 4th May. Camilla discussed the problems facing local people and acknowledged that the need for our service would only increase due to the economic downturn. She also met our longest serving volunteer Miriam Beresford, and acknowledged the fantastic job all volunteers do in keeping the advice service up and running. If you need advice our drop in sessions are: Tuesday and Thursday 10-12 Please note that we are unable to deal with Disability Living Allowance / Attendance Allowance forms or during drop in please ring us to give us your details and an appointment will be made. We also offer outreach services for families with children of 5 and under at various children centres throughout the area. On a Thursday afternoon we deliver an advice session at Foxhill Medical Centre for registered patients please call the surgery for an appointment. If you think you can offer your time and commitment by volunteering please give us a ring and ask to speak to Sarah. TAI CHI GROUP

If you are looking for gentle exercise that is good for your health, then Tai Chi might be for you!
Tai Chi is a form of exercise from ancient China that is gentle and nonaerobic and is performed slowly and quietly. It has been used for hundreds of years and helps maintain: mobility suppleness mental alertness balance The Tai Chi group based at Wolfe Road Healthy Living Centre has been running since 1997. Over the years there have been over 140 members, and the oldest member is 86 years old. Here is what some of our members have said about the Tai Chi group: It develops your mind as well as your body. Youve got to think as well as do the movements. It makes you feel more at ease with yourself. Its friendly and relaxed, you go at your own pace. I like Pauls (the teacher) favourite saying its not a competition. It helps relax you. Especially if youve got arthritic joints, it helps keep them supple. The class is based at Wolfe Road Healthy Living Centre, and welcomes new members. The Tai Chi Group meets every Wednesday 1pm-2.30pm (term time). Classes begin again on Wednesday 7th September 2011. The first session is FREE, with subsequent sessions charged at 2 per session this goes towards the cost of the teacher and room hire. COOKING CORNER
This recipe was really popular on our recent Big Lunch Day! It is really tasty and adaptable depending on what you have in your kitchen! We have provided you with suggestions of vegetables on the ingredients list, but feel free to use other items depending on your tastes. Experiment with seasoning and herbs on your chicken. (to serve a family of 4)

Method:
Wash and prepare the vegetables for your kebabs. Chop the peppers and onions into small pieces about 2-3cm. Slice the corguette into 1cm discs. Mushrooms can be halved or left whole. Wash the chicken breasts, and cut into 2-3cm chunks. Try to make sure the chicken is cut into similar sized pieces (to ensure the chicken cooks equally). Wash your hands. Push vegetables and chicken pieces onto skewers. Repeating patterns look colourful and effective. Wash your hands. Place your skewers in a preheated oven at 200C for 20minutes (or until chicken is cooked all the way through). Wash and prepare your salad. Use leftover peppers and onion in your salad. Toast your pitta breads until golden brown in a toaster. Serve 2 kebab skewers per person, with a pitta bread and side salad. Alternatively, serve your kebabs with a medium jacket potato with a small handful of grated cheddar cheese.

Chicken Kebabs Ingredients: For the kebabs

2 chicken breasts punnet of mushrooms 1 red pepper 1 yellow pepper 1 large red onion 1 corguette 4 wholemeal pitta breads 8 wooden skewers (soak in water before use)

For seasonal salad

Salad leaves Cherry tomatoes Cucumber Red onion (left over from kebabs) Peppers (left over from kebabs)

Enjoy your summer! Summer 2011

Individuals completing the course will be given support by staff at Foxhill Forum, with a mixture of one-to-one and group support where necessary. There is no cost for this short course, and we provide all the materials that are needed.
