Terms Meaning
Essay It is a short piece of prose

Thesis Statement Challenges reader to say, “Prove it!”
Opening Paragraph It introduces the thesis and details to be developed.
Middle Paragraph It expands the details, facts, examples, or reasons.
Final Paragraph It summarizes or it restates the thesis.
Outline It lists all the divisions and points of the essay
Note cards It records information to be used in the essay
Source cards We use it to document the resources.
Coordinating Conjunction It connects sentence elements that are of equal value.
Correlative Conjunction These conjunctions are always used in pairs to indicate a
comparative or contrasting relationship of words or ideas
in a sentence.
Subordinating Conjunction These conjunctions introduce adverb clauses which are
dependent, or subordinate, to the main clause of the
sentence.
Conjunctive Adverb This conjunction is much like the coordinating
conjunction in function. It joins independent clauses an
is preceded by semicolon and is usually followed by a
comma.
Interjection This is a word that shows emotion.
Expletive It is a filler word and has no useful function in a
sentence.

show how ideas are related.

attention to regional interests, people, or nature.
Characterization The literary technique of creating a vivid, realistic

Exposition Is the introduction of the characters in a story
