Q.4 A motorist travelling at 90 km/h notices that the traffic signal 450 m ahead of him turns red. He knows
that it is timed to stay red for 20 sec. If he desires to pass the signal at 90km/h just it turns green again,
determine
(a) the smallest common rate of deceleration & acceleration he should have.
(b) the minimum speed reached in the process. [Ans: 0.5 m/s2, 20m/s] [5]

Q.5 The current velocity of a river grows in proportion to the distance from its bank and reaches its maximum
value v0 in the middle. Near the bank the velocity is zero. A boat is so moving in the river that its velocity
u relative to the water is constant and perpendicular to the current. Find the distance throught which the
boat crossing the river will be carried away by the current if the width of the river is d. Also determine the
v0 d 2 ud

Q.6 A projectile thrown from a platform at a height 10m above the ground with velocity of 20m/sec. At what
angle should the projectile be thrown to reach the farthest point from O, which is vertically below the
 2
point from which it is thrown. [g = 10m/s2] [Ans: tan–1  
 3 ] [5]

Q.7 A student is riding on a train along a straight horizontal track at a speed of 10m/sec. The student throws
a ball into the air along a path that, he judges to make an initial angle of 600 with the horizontal and to be
in line with the track. The professor, who is standing on the ground nearby, observes tha ball to rise
vertically. Find the height reached by the ball. [Ans: 15 m] [5]

Q.8 A wet open umbrella is held upright and whirled about the handle with a uniform angular speed of 21
revolutions in 44 sec. If the rim of the umbrella is a circle of diameter 1m, and height of the rim from the
ground is 1.5 m, find the radius of the circle along which the drops of water spun off the rim hit the
ground. [Ans: 37 / 40m ][5]
PART B
