Question No. 6 & 7 (2 questions)

A yo-yo is pulled by its string along a horizontal surface without slipping. The
horizontal velocity of the end of the string remains equal to v. A smooth bar is
pivoted as shown and remains supported by the yo-yo. The outer and the inner
radii of the yo-yo are R and r, respectively.
Q.6 The velocity of centre of mass of yo-yo is
v(R  r ) v(R  r ) vR
(A) vr/R (B) (C) (D)
R R Rr
Q.7 The angular speed of the bar as a function of  is
2
 2 v  sin ( / 2)  v  1
(A)   (B)  
 R  r  cos( / 2)  R  r  sin 2 
2v v( R  r )
(C) sin 2 ( / 2) (D) sin 
Rr R2
Q.8 System is shown in figure. All the surfaces are smooth. Rod is moved by external agent
with acceleration 9 m/s2 vertically downwards. Force exerted on the rod by the wedge
will be:
(A) 120 N (B) 200 N (C) 135/2 N (D) 225/2 N

Q.9 In the figure shown man is balanced by counter weight of same mass. He starts to climb the
rope with an accelerator of 2 m/s2 w.r.t. rope. The time after which he reaches the pulley will be
(A) 10 sec (B) 2 5 sec
(C) infinity (D) None of these

Q.10 The ends of two rods of different materials with their thermal conductivities, radii of cross sections and
lengths all are in the ratio 1 : 2 are maintained at the same temperature difference. If the rate of flow of
heat in the larger rod is 4 cal/sec, that in the shorter rod in cal/sec. will be
(A) 1 (B) 2 (C) 8 (D) 16

PART B
Q.1 Two bars of masses m1 and m2 connected by a non-deformed light spring rest on a horizontal plane. The
coefficient of friction between the bars and the surface is equal to k. What minimum constant force has
to be applied in the horizontal direction to the bar of mass m1 in order to shift the other bar? [5]

Q.2 A cosmic body A moves to the Sun with velocity v0 (when far from the Sun) and
aiming parameter l the arm of the vector v0 relative to the centre of the Sun (as
shown in the figure). Find the minimum distance by which this body will get to
the Sun. [5]

Q.3 A small body A is fixed to the inside of a thin rigid hoop of radius R and mass
equal to that of the body A. The hoop rolls without slipping over a horizontal
plane; at the moments when the body A gets into the lower position, the centre
of the hoop moves with velocity v0 (as shown in the figure). At what values of
v0 will the hoop move without bouncing? [5]

Q.4 A spherical shell is uniformly charged with the surface density . Using the energy
conservation law, find the magnitude of the electric force acting on a unit area of
the shell. [5]

Q.5 Four identical metal plates are located in air at equal distances d from one another. The area of each
plate is equal to S. Find the capacitance of the system between points A and B if the plates are
