Nick Zhang Fisherman Conflict February 3rd, 2021

1: The man loves fishing at night because of the loneliness and labor of it.
During the night, the man cannot see very well so when the sea devil’s
horns splash in the water the man assumes that they are mullets. When he
throws his casting net at the ray, the animal is startled leading to the
conflict where the man is pulled into the lagoon.

2: The man had flashbacks of random moments and faces the

dilemma/fear of death. The tension from the ray pulling against the man
kicking off the stake with the help of the barnacles cut the rope free.

3: He learned to never cast during the middle of the night. The narrator
describes to the reader that the man learned to never fish at night again.

4: The conflict between the civilized and the primitive where the civilized is
the man and the primitive is the sea devil. The plane reference is a symbol
of proud mastery over nature, the causeway means to have hope and
persevere and finally the man’s wife at home is a reference of love.
