Most Catastrophic Earthquakes
The earth's crust is a complex phenomenon. Tectonic plates are a part of this crust, and their
movement causes what we call an earthquake. According to the United States Geological
Survey, these plates rub onto each other continuously; however, an earthquake occurs when
friction between them is overcome by energy built between plates.
A horrifying natural disaster, earthquakes can cause substantially large amounts of damage to
anything and everything. In the worst cases, they are followed by a Tsunami, obliterating
anything and everything in their way. Compiled below is a list of the most catastrophic
earthquakes in history.
The Indian Ocean Earthquake - 2004
One of the worst natural disasters in the Asian region occurred on 26th December 2004 as a 9.1
magnitude earthquake struck the region. The quake's center was under the sea close to the
Indonesian island of Sumatra.
Consequently, a massive Tsunami swept through the coastal areas of neighboring regions.
Multiple countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, India, and Sri Lanka, were greatly
affected. In total, 14 countries were affected, and almost 250,000 people were killed because of
the Tsunami alone. Reports from some regions revealed that this Tsunami's waves were as high
as 30 feet, making it one of the worst Tsunamis in history.
The total loss from the earthquake amounted to 13 billion dollars, with nearly 1.7 million people
displaced across the region.
The Haiti Earthquake - 2010
In 2010, one of the world's poorest countries was hit by an 8.0 magnitude earthquake on 12th
January. The center of this quake was 25 kilometers off the coast of the capital city of Port Au
Prince. The metropolitan area was most affected as multiple aftershocks rocked the region even
days later. These aftershocks were as high as 5.9 and occurred even days after the original
earthquake.
There are no specific figures regarding damages from the disaster; however, according to
estimates, nearly 1.5 million people were displaced from their homes with approximately 8
billion dollars of monetary damage. The death toll from the earthquake was about 316,000,
making it one of the worst disasters in the world.
The Sichuan Earthquake – 2008
Centered In southern China, the earthquake occurred in the province of Sichuan with a
magnitude of 7.9. Chinese claims measured the earthquake at 8.0. According to reports, the
center was almost 100 kilometers away from the capital and caused largescale damage to the
buildings in the region. Many towns and villages were lost, as estimates show four-fifth of all
buildings were turned to rubble.
Authorities estimated the death toll to be nearly 90,000, with almost 370,000 people injured due
to the earthquake. Humans and animals were affected as Wolong Panda Center in the region
reported multiple deaths and a missing Panda after the quake.
Hundreds of catastrophic earthquakes have occurred, with thousands of lost lives. They remain
one of the most unforgiving natural disasters, and with no strong measures to prevent or predict
them, our lives appear to be at the mercy of mother nature.
