Prepositions for time

Prepositions for numbers

• From … to: describe movement in an upward or downward direction on the graph with verbs
such as rise

• Begin/End/Stand + at: describe a state (not movement)

• With nouns, use of

• By: the amount of change between two points

• To: change to an exact point

Example:

• The proportion of fast food consumed witnessed a sharp decrease from 50% to about 20%.

• The number of cars produced in UK stood at/began at 100,000 units in 1990.

• An increase of 5% was seen in the consumption of Pizza from 2005 to 2010.

• The consumption of Pizza increased by 5% from 2005 to 2010.

• The number of cars produced in UK stood at 100,000 units, after which it saw a slight decline to
70,000 units.
