Apple vs. Google

Below is a summary of the case

For more details, see https://www.txpatentattorney.com/blog/google-vs-apple-the-patent-
war/

The smartphone patent wars have been raging since 2009, and pretty much every smartphone
manufacturer has been involved at some time. It’s no surprise, as a new smartphone at that time
can contain hundreds of thousands of patents, creating a tangled web of intellectual property
disputes. Apple and Google have been going at it for years, the argument mainly revolving
around the Android mobile operating system, which Apple co-founder Steve Jobs called a “stolen
product.” Finally, in 2014, the two companies agreed to settle all patent litigation between them,
ending one of technology’s highest-profile lawsuits.

Assessment Requirements:
Having read this case, you are required to:
1. Critically appraise how such patents are protected in the UAE (CLO2, 15 Points)
2. Judge what liability and remedies in case someone violates one of Apple’s patents in the
UAE and Apple filed a case for patent violation. (CLO2, 10 Points)
3. Critically advise what rights are granted to a patentee in the UAE including the term of
protection and how the scope of protection of patent is determined. (CLO3, 15 Points)

The size of the report is 2,000 words and must be uploaded on the LMS.
