The following diagram shows the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥), −3 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 5.

a) Find the value of (𝑓 ∘ 𝑓)(1). [2 marks]


b) Given that 𝑓 −1 (𝑎) = 3, determine the value of 𝑎. [2 marks]
c) Given that 𝑔(𝑥) = 2𝑓(𝑥 − 1), find the domain and range of 𝑔. [2 marks]

Let 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 4 + 𝑝 ∙ 𝑥 3 + 𝑞 ∙ 𝑥 + 5 where p, q are constants.

The remainder when f(x) is divided by (𝑥 + 1) is 7 and the remainder when f(x) is divided
by (𝑥 − 2) is 1. Find the value of p and the value of q. [5 marks]

a) Differentiate from first principles the function 𝑓(𝑥) = √𝑥 − 1. [5 marks]


b) Explain why the function f(x) is not differentiable at x = 1. [2 marks]

Let 𝑓(𝑥) = 4 − 𝑥 3 and 𝑔(𝑥) = ln𝑥, for 𝑥 > 0.


a) Find (𝑓 ∘ 𝑔)(𝑥). [2 marks]
b) Solve the equation (𝑓 ∘ 𝑔)(𝑥) = 𝑥. [2 marks]
c) Hence or otherwise, given that 𝑔(2𝑎) = 𝑓 −1 (2𝑎), find the value of 𝑎. [3 marks]

Consider the polynomial 𝑃(𝑧) ≡ 𝑧 4 − 7𝑧 3 + 13𝑧 2 + 3𝑧 − 15,   𝑧 ∈ ℂ.

a) Sketch the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑥 4 − 6𝑥 3 − 2𝑥 2 + 58𝑥 − 51, stating clearly the coordinates


of any maximum and minimum points and intersections with axes. [5 marks]

b) Hence, or otherwise, state the condition on 𝑘 ∈ ℝ such that all roots of the equation
𝑃(𝑧) = 𝑘 are real. [2 marks]
4. [Maximum mark 7]
The function f is defined by 𝑓(𝑥) = 32𝑥 − 8 ∙ 3𝑥 + 12, 𝑥 ≤ 𝑎.
a) Find the largest value of a such that f has an inverse function [2 marks]
b) For this value of a, find an expression for 𝑓 −1 (𝑥), stating its domain [5 marks]

Consider the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 2 sin 𝑥 + √3 cos 𝑥, for 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 2𝜋.


a) Write f(x) in the form 𝑦 = 𝑘 sin(𝑥 + 𝑎), where k > 0 and −𝜋 < 𝑎 < 𝜋 [4 marks]
b) Write the maximum value of f(x) [1 marks]
