ordeals that this historic district has seen over centuries. The church was constructed in the
sixteenth century by the Spanish. The architecture of the church is modelled over the magnificent
Augustinian temples all over the world. The interiors are breathtakingly pretty , decorated with
stained glass and catholic symbols. The ceiling is especially noteworthy because of its rosettes

and Romanesque designs, the San Agustin is truly a must visit when in Manila.

Casa Manila, Manila

Casa Manila is reproduction of a Spanish colonial house that takes visitors out of the present
age and transports them to a time where the Spanish ruled and Manila was highly influenced
aesthetically and culturally. Imelda Marcos had this house built lavishly, with interesting items from
that period and authentic architecture. The stunning furniture and artwork are simply a delight to the
eyes and so is the medieval aura that surrounds this charming house. The house is a Spanish
aristocratic mansion at it’s best.

Chinatown Or Binondo, Manila

nonetheless. Full of interesting sights and smells, Chinatown is full of souvenir shops and small
eateries serving authentic food. It is the nerve of Manila; a thriving metropolis with pockets of
diverse culture. The Chinese were given particular places to live in during the Spanish
civilization, leading to the formation of Chinatown. Monuments like Binondo Church and Seng
Guan Temple that lie in the vicinity give the neighbourhood a quaint, historic quality.

Chinese Cemetery, Manila

The Chinese cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Manila and is the resting place for
the Chinese who were denied burial in catholic cemeteries during the Spanish rule. It has a number of
prominent landmarks like the oldest Chinese temple in Manila, the Chong Hock Tong Temple. The
Martyrs hall and the memorials are beautifully maintained. The Cemetery is special because it looks
like a residential suburb of sorts; with mausoleums that can put some modern houses to shame. Some

Manila, also formerly known as Tondo until 1859, was a historical province in

the Philippines, encompassing the former pre-Hispanic polities of Tondo, Maynila and Namayan.
11

In 1898, it included the City of Manila (which mainly refers to the present-
day Intramuros) and 23 other municipalities. It was incorporated into the Province of Rizal in
1901.

Cities and municipalities

The province was composed of the City of Manila and 23 other municipalities. The
districts of Binondo, Dilao, Ermita, Malate, Pandacan, Quiapo, Sampaloc, San Miguel, Santa
Ana, Santa Cruz, and Tondo are often referred to as "pueblos", "arrabales" ("suburbs") or
"neighbourhoods" of Manila. The name Manila originally referred to the "city within the walls"
(now Intramuros), but its meaning eventually came to include the suburbs surrounding it, leading
to confusion about which places constitute "Manila" in the late 19th century. [1][2][3] From the
1860s onward, the area was often referred to as Ciudad de Manila y sus arrabales ("The City of
Manila and its suburbs") or as Manila y los pueblos de extramuros ("Manila and the communities
outside the walls").[2] The present-day City of Manila includes all these areas.
