EFFECTIVE

LEADERSHIP
Deborah Treur | BOH4M | March 2023

What is leadership?
The skill of influencing or leading a group of people so that they
are able to accomplish a goal or mission. Leaders motivate people
to do a job. Whenever a company or organization has to deal with
people and problems they will need an effective leader.

Employers and managers come together to
combine ideas for a decision. The leader
invites the employers for their input.

Leadership style: Laissez-faire

The leader sets and objective and lets the team
decide how to complete the objective. In this setting
the team members have more responsibility.

Leadership style: Directive

/autocratic
This type of environment puts a big emphasis on the tasks

that need to be completed. The directive style allows for no

feedback and the autocratic style allows for little feedback. In
this style the team members are given certain tasks based on
the information.

reward and punishment

Behavioural leadership theory: based on actions and

behaviour not on traits and quality

Effective communication
Communication is a big part of leadership since all the team members that
you are leading have to understand what message you are trying to bring
across to them. If I'm manger of a ice cream factory and I would like to
create a new favour of ice cream I would need good communication skills
to bring across my objectives for the assignment.

1. Make eye contact

2. Be aware of who you are talking to and communicate

accordingly

3. Use the right medium

4. Use clear language and proper posture

Reasons for poor

communication

Distractions
restrictive environments
encoding problems
media problems
decoding problems
lack of feedback

Communication process
Sender thinks of idea
Sender encodes the message
Message travels over a medium
Receiver decodes the message
Receiver sends feedback to the
sender
