Construction Methods & Materials 1 – Assignment 1 - LMoran

- Strapping, SPF N2, Ottawa, Subflooring: OSB-2

- Sill plates: 2 x 6 (38 x 184)

Nominal span 4.7 m R1) In Table A1 = @400cm o/c max. spacing

R2) In Table 9.23.14.5.A= Min. thickness subfloor: 15.5mm

- 16” = 405 (0.40m) In Table A1= 400cm o/c

R1) For 3.9 corresponds = 38 x 235, thus a 2x8 (38x140) CANNOT BE USED
R2) Table 9.23.4.5.A, Min. thickness subfloor = 15.5.mm

Nominal span: 3.9 m

R1) In Table A-1 corresponds = Max spacing of 400 o/c for 38 x 235 joist.

Thus, 2x10 (38x235) @ 24 (600) is not the permitted spacing CANNOT BE USED @24”

R2) in Table 9.23.4.5.A, Min. thickness subfloor = 15.5.mm

Nominal span: 4.7 m

R1) In Table A-1 corresponds = Max spacing of 400 o/c for 38 x 235 joist.

Thus, 2x10 (38x235) @ 16 (400) is the permitted spacing IT CAN BE USED

R2) in Table 9.23.4.5.A, Min. thickness subfloor = 15.5.mm

Construction Methods & Materials 1 – Assignment 1 - LMoran

Nominal span: 8.6 m

R: In Table A-1 corresponds = Max spacing is NOT ALLOWED for this span. It must be 5.28 m max.

R: In 9.23.14.7 states: Lumber subflooring shall be laid at an angle not less than 45° to the floor joists.
SO IT IS ALLOWED TO INSTALL IT 90° (right angle). Lumber is stronger in that direction.

R1) Nominal SJL : 1.95 + 2.35 = 4.3 m

R2) Actual span: 13.0 (nominal) – 0.2 – 0.2 = 12.6 m (12600)

R3) Min. depth: 12600 + 89 + 89 = 12 778 = 12.778 m

SJL = 4.3m

1 column to the middle distance generates 2 equal spans, each one 6300 (6.3m)

R: W250 x 33 (Max. span 6300) – W250 x 39 CAN SATISFY THE LOADING CONDITIONS.

Using 3 columns, it generates 4 equally beam spans of 12.6/4 = 3.15 m (3.2 in Table 9.23.4.3 @ 600)
Construction Methods & Materials 1 – Assignment 1 - LMoran

Using 3 equally spaced columns, generates 4 beam spans of 3.15 m @ 600.

R: This is indicated in Table 9.23.4.3. as W150 X 22 for Two storeys section.

New nominal joist span 1= 3200

New nominal joist span 2= 5400

R: SJL = (3.2/2) + (5.4/2) = 1.6 + 2.7 = 4.3 M

Not in particular order:

- Span distance to satisfy

- Commercial designation

- Joist size

- Type of system (Strapping, Bridging, Strapping and Bridging)

- Number of storeys to support

- Nominal SJL to be used
