IMORTANT FEATURES. It served as the center of religious, political,
and artistic life for the Byzantine world. Hagia Sophia also served as
important site of Muslim worship after Sultan Mehmed II conquered
Constantinople and turned it into a mosque.

Instead of solid buttresses, there is a structure of spaces that are the
envelope around the central space. The grandiose conception of the
central space is linked to the complex construction of the surrounding
space, where the system of supports of the great dome is enclosed.
