A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC coming to Manatee Performing Arts Center

(OCTOBER 26 – NOVEMBER 12, 2017)

(BRADENTON, FLA) Manatee Performing Arts Center proudly presents A LITTLE NIGHT
MUSIC, which debuted on Broadway in 1973 and ran for 601 performances, with lyrics and
music by Steven Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. Rick Kerby, who serves as Producing
Artistic Director, will direct. Winner of four Tony Awards, this is a musical work that has
forever entranced the world of theatre. A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC begins previews on October
24, opens on October 26, and runs through November 12, in Stone Hall as a part of the
Broadway Series.

Sondheim creates a stunning tour de force when he takes Ingmar Bergman's comedy of
manners, Smiles of a Summer Night, and turns it into a musical of masterful execution and
elegance. “It’s a mature play, not in the sense that it’s not accessible to all ages,” Kerby
remarked. “It’s one of Sondheim’s more sophisticated plays. It explores with inuendo and
nuance, It’s about the three stages of love and life.” A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC is full of
hilariously witty and heartbreakingly moving moments of adoration, regret and desire.

Set in 1900 Sweden, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC explores the tangled web of affairs centered
around actress, Desirée Armfeldt, and the men who love her: a lawyer by the name of Fredrik
Egerman and the Count Carl-Magnus Malcom. When the traveling actress performs in Fredrik's
town, the estranged lovers' passion rekindles. This strikes a flurry of jealousy and suspicion
between Desirée; Fredrik; Fredrick's wife, Anne; Desirée's current lover, the Count; and the
Count's wife, Charlotte. Both men – as well as their jealous wives – agree to join Desirée and
her family for a weekend in the country at Desirée's mother's estate. With everyone in one
place, infinite possibilities of new romances and second chances bring endless surprises.

Kerby has been seen on the stages in over thirty countries and all fifty US states. He appeared
on Broadway and in the National Touring Company of A Match Made in Heaven and Yankee
Doodle Dandy. Prior to his move to Bradenton, Rick was the Entertainment Director for the
USO of Metropolitan New York and the organizer of the Miss USO Contest. His USO troupe
was featured on the Today Show, Good Morning America, Fox News, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day
Parade and on The Miss America Pageant. The same USO troupe performed as part of the
USO Celebrity Tours in the Middle East, Europe and the Baltic.
